Hey y'all, so a friend of mine told me about this DAFNE course you can do for Type 1 Diabetes. Has anyone done this course and if so was to helpful?

I found this website for those who don't know what DAFNE is - http://www.dafne.uk.com/.
Enjoy! :D

Hi @No1DeadlyPoison
it is a game changer -- -- gives you so much more flexibility ( more responsibility too )
but deffo worth it -- I have done MDI with DAFNE for the last 13 years !!!

go for it !!!!!!

Hi - Hear the course if fantastic but is a full time 5 day course i believe... still waiting to get on it... apparently there is a wait list of over 12 months in my area to get on the couse cant wait!!

Hi @No1DeadlyPoison

Yes, DAFNE is a good course to go on, you will benefit a great deal from it.

Quite apart from teaching you how to carb count accurately, it covers a whole range of topics you wouldn't realise are affected by D, and being a structured course is presented in a way which makes it easy to understand, absorb, and retain the information presented.

It also provides an extra arm of support to the DSN network, which when having a hard time with the condition, can be a very welcome help. The people running the course have a great understanding of the condition, and importantly have the time to discuss any problems you may be having in coping with it; I can heartily recommend any T1 to attend a DAFNE course (I'm only a participant, not official promoter!)

I've done the full 5 session course, been to a refresher, and am booked on another refresher later this year. You will also find it a good way to chat to and make friends with other T1's in your area.

If, like me you are unable to attend the 5-days in one week, they also offer the course as a one-day a week for 5 weeks course. I attended the latter as I could not take a week off work, and was concerned whether brain fog might prevent me taking it all on board in one go.

I went to the equivalent course at my local Scottish Hospital called the Buddie Group, it really was life changing for me. It is harder work on a day to day basis but well worth it. Like @Nidge247 I went over 5 weeks, a day a week. It was also useful to meet with other Type 1 Diabetics to share stories and information with. You could also read the book 'Think Like a Pancreas' Book, available on Amazon, it gives a great insight in to Diabetes without being too complicated. Best of Luck with getting a place on the DAFNE course.

Cheers for that will definately look into that and discuss the 1 day 5 times option with my DNS:)

Done mine back in 2009, changed everything......recommend it......especially if your coming from a position where you don't know much about carbs or dose adjustment...

It's a really good course and would highly recommend it, even if you don't learn anything new it's a great experience being in a room with other people who go through all the trials and tribulations that type 1 can throw at us :)

DAFNE is a very good course and offers the chance to learn so much more not only from the course but all the other type 1's on the course.
After 23 yrs T1 i was amazed at some of the things I didn't know.

P.S this forum is brilliant as well.

Hi, yes ive done the DAFNE course and agree with Himtoo; its a game changer. If you go on it you can make up your mind at the end whether you choose to follow it. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it x

Thank you all for your responses, I shall ask my consultant or my Diabetes GP Nurse (which ever I see first) about the course, hopefully they will have a course in my area and I won't have to travel to far for it. I shall let you all know how I get on. Watch this space! >_<
