Type 1: When's the last time you had a hypo?

hey just wanted to ask everyone whens the last time you had a hypo and how long does it take for you to go from hypo to normal feeling
 
I had a 3.3 this afternoon. As usual I over did hypo treatment and spent the rest of the day in 16 to 13 range. Just about under control again now. Felt fine within about 20mins.
 
2 on Friday evening. I spotted them coming on in time so they didn't last too long but had to retreat one to get back over 4.0.
 
Today unfortunately... Bolused my usual morning correction and correction for my "waking rise" - but had a bottle of wine last night so that had a big part to play...

That's perfectly fine. The important thing is that you are getting the symptoms at a level which is above 4mmol/l. It would be more concerning to lose the symptoms when approaching the lower level of you ideal target range.
 
Agree / I feel fine within a few minutes but feel far worse when sugars run high. Last hypo was last week after an aerobic class.
 
Being fairly new to the disease, I've only had one hypo so far. I was more than prepared for it. I felt shaky, measured a 3.3, ate a square of chocolate and had a swig of fruit juice. It took about 15 minutes to stop the shaking and then I was good to go - when I checked at my next meal I was sitting at 5.7 again.

It's been exactly 16 days since diagnosis. For the first half of this month I've been riding high - levels consistently between 10 and 20. Once I talked to the diabetes specialist I was able to combine the sliding scale with what my meals were and then for a few days my numbers were down into the 5-10 range.
 
Yesterday evening...........ready for this?

At work, team meeting, my lack of will power got the better of me and each time the tin of sweets went round the table I found a neat pile sat in front of me, briefly! So after the meeting (just after 17:00) did a blood test, as expected it was very high, did a correction, cycled home and before tea I was back in normal range (@18:20), which seemed a bit quick really. Bolused for tea, and then shortly after took him (<--) for a walk, just coming home about 300yards away, thought I felt low (symptom is a prickly heat mainly on my back!) - got in and did a test, 2.3 (@20:20) had glucotabs and feeling fine within 10mins, no big deal.

The up shot of this little story is that I believe I had sweet residue on my finger when doing the blood test after the meeting, giving me a higher high, and therefore taking too much correction, and then possibly miscalculating tea time carbs, stacking tea times bolus on top of the correction too, 2hrs exactly after tea came the low.

This May I'd have had T1D for 20yrs, you'd think these sort of things shouldn't happen...........! :rolleyes:
 
At 8.30pm last night. Was having boiled rice with tea and think I overestimated my portion of rice. Frustrating as now using boil in the bag rice to get a better judge of my portion sizes. Frustration.......

Injection timing is also fundamental, especially or more so with Rice!
 
Three times yesterday, one mid morning, one just before lunch and one on the walk home...
 
I had one this morning when I woke up. It generally takes around 10 mins for me to start feeling better, sometimes can take a bit longer to 'feel' better even if my sugars are in a normal range again.

Hey @GrantGam - can you tell me a little bit more about how wine affects your BG? I don't drink much but occasionally have a glass or two with dinner and can't seem to work out what happens!

Typically, I'll need about 2u Novorapid to cover a bottle. It's a lot better than any other drinks in terms of how it raises my BG, apart from spirits. They don't raise my BG at all.

When I drink alcohol it seems to stop my DP and also makes me more insulin sensitive the next day. So I need to reduce my I:C ratio up until lunchtime or so, just depends on how much of the stuff I put away though:)

Alcohol and diabetes is purely trial and error. I know that I can get away with cans of Tennents lager and red wine with small boluses to compensate, but everything else just seems to make my numbers climb...

Nocturnal hypoglycemia is another problematic symptom when mixing insulin and alcohol, so I always make sure to have 30g or so carbs with no bolus insulin before bed. But if I'd just had a few drinks I usually wouldn't bother with any carbs.

Test, test, test is the best way to see what impact alcohol has on your BG:)
 
I kind of shocked myself today. I didn't expect blood sugar to fall so quickly from simple walking.
I had to walk 30 minutes to the bank, spend an hour in a meeting, then walk 30 minutes back, and my sugar went from 11.5 to 3.8 in that time.

I mean... I walk 20 minutes to work every day when it isn't freezing cold, so I really am not looking forward to getting lows simply from arriving there. Might have to start a plan where I eat a biscuit before leaving, or something.
