Diet Doctor Low Carb Challenge

Lost our lovely Max last summer (see profile pic) - giving it a year or so as we are planning a super-holiday to Australiabut then back to the rescue kennels! He was a staffie crossed with a greyhound - very interesting mix!

FINALLY!!!
As I said been a busy day again. Took No 1 to the park for a few hours as it turned out a lovely day. The park is exercise and then a bit for me manoeuvring with a crutch. Then swimming with No 2 but back now. The finally is because I'm at 5.7 - my over inflated stuffed liver may finally be deflating.
Day didn't start so well. I got up to an 8 - no coffee - and I remained at 8 pre breakfast. Things are not looking good for the coffee. Took a while to drop down and breakfast knocked it up to 9 ! But just checked and I'm at 5.7. Legs are aching but the walking must have done me good. Not had dinner yet so will be careful.

Another fasting day for me. Woke up with a return of the plague aka Mr C's cold - and a FBG of .... 7.7!!!

Its a gorgeous day here... quite mild, lots of sunshine, gentle breeze and I've just had an advance weather warning of snow and high winds by Thursday / Friday. I love February you never now where you are with the weather.

Snap - we have the snow warning as well - yesterday was lovely too. I'm on Day 3 of no coffee or tea and I'm not convinced it is helping me. I was overjoyed yesterday to get back into the 5's yesterday. After dinner I was sitting at 6.7 and it remained there. I accidentally tested again before going to bed and I had jumped to 8 in the space of 30 mins! I had nothing to eat or drink in that period apart from water so it had to be the liver again.
This morning I didn't have the early morning run about as No 1 was walking to school with his friend and his gran and No 2 is at home so I went straight to the pre breakfast test. To my horror it was 9.5. I have had nothing but water for 16 hrs so I have no idea what is going on.
My legs were agony yesterday and are still bad today so, as an early warning system of illness, I'm hoping I'm not joining you in a re-emergence of the cold? Brother wasn't well yesterday but is fine today so fingers crossed that it is just my efforts from yesterday as I don't feel unwell.
Surely my liver must be running out of things to dump by now? Ah well , let's see how the rest of today goes. I've had my usual eggs and bacon now so hopefully that will start the drop.

Yes, I'm wondering where my liver is getting it all from, too. The only thing I can think to do is reduce protein but I'm reluctant to do that. It's not like I eat a huge amount of it anyway.

@Brunneria. Are you having a lovely relaxing time? I had a sneaky slice of LC cake last night and thought of you turning up at your relatives house bearing gifts of cake and cream. :)

I'm back at 6.5 but it has taken almost all day to get there. I really don't get this at all. Having said that I dreamt I dropped to 3.8 while I was sleeping and that made me nervous. Either that or it is hubby constantly prattling on in his sleep.

I ended up splurging on another Libre sensor.

Either this one is reading low, or my bg has dropped again. Dipped below 4 twice in the night, and cruising between 4.5 and 5.6 all day. When I get home, I will do some comparison tests with the pricker, but I didn't bring it with me.

- and that is eating vlc meat and greens with butter, low carb cake with cream, and 2x coffee substitutes with cream a day. (Guesstimating 12-15 g carbs a day)

I am delighted and awed that my relatives are being so brilliantly helpful.

And I'm feeling really good on it.

.....and like you my cold has re-emerged. In the last hour sore throat, runny nose - I should have believed my poor aching legs - they've never been wrong. Can't blame the park as my legs were already in a bad way. So back to the First Defence and paracetamol and hot showers.
Still off the coffee and tea but iced water is soothing on the throat. At least I could taste my dinner - I'm with Mr Chook on this - feed a cold......

Gee this is getting more and more confusing. 6.9 before dinner 6.4 After? There is no logic to this at all.

You have definitely got the same Plague that Mr B has. Cycling through stuffed nose, sore throat, coughing, with a bit of loose bowels thrown in occasionally for spice. Rinse and repeat.

He's entering his third week of it. Keeps thinking he is over it but then it shifts to a new presentation and gets a new lease of life.

We think I had it last year, because I had a similar thing, and got a mild snuffle this time, then threw it off. Horrible when I had it, you have my sympathy.

Yes, that is EXACTLY what I've got. I've got no energy to do anything. Mr C is about 10 days in front of me with it and woke me up asking for paracetamol at 3am because of a cracking headache.
And.....my FBG this morning was 8.8! I haven't had BG that high for months. Yes, I washed my hands again and redid the test. :( I am also running a bit of a temperature, got aching bones (as well as my normal arthritis) and a bit of conjunctivitis. Falling apart, basically.

One nice thing though, I've been putting off having this:
https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/oven-grilled-pork-shoulder-chops-green-beans-avocado
because I don't like pork and I thought it sounded bland, but it was really, really nice even though I didn't much feel like eating.. I put part steamed broccoli in with the beans. Will definitely cook it again.

Monster new dog Jack has chewed in half another indestructible toy - and swallowed almost all of it.

Amazing BGs - this way of eating is definitely suiting you. Do you think you can keep with it long term?

Mine did the same yesterday so it's probably this bug. Mine was 6.6 before dinner and 5.4 two hours later. All very strange - and really annoying.

I didn't manage an all day fast yesterday as planned but I did manage until lunchtime when a mug of bovril turned on the munchies.

@Chook
Can i stay with it long term?

Not sure i have a choice, really.
The last 4-5 years i have tried
- varying carb amounts from 20g up to 50ish
- varying calorie amounts, from 1,200 up to around 3,000
- varying exercise amounts from regular gym cardio, weights and spa, right down to gentle dog trundles in the park (when my back problem was playing up)
- varying water intake
- i have eliminated dairy products containing whey, coffee, all grains (with a focus on gluten), and only eat root veg in minute amounts
- dropped and varied protein intake
- tried intermittent fasting consistently for a year
- tried varying snacks and routines to reduce my Dawn Phenomenon/ Waking Phenomenon

None of them have had anywhere near the effect on my blood glucose that dropping to under 20g carbs has.
Up until now, the best I could do was keeping my morning figures in the 6s, and my afternoon figures in the high 5s.
I'm now an average 1 mmol/l lower through the day, with insignificant rises with food.
It must be what my body has been needing all the time.

I guess I am just one of those people that Voleck and Phinney talk about whose metabolisms are so broken that they need to get under 20g a day and stay there for life.

As for you ladies, all i can say is that while you have the Plague on board, you won't be getting any idea of what effect these foods are really having on you. Viruses muck everything up! I suspect that you will know the virus has gone for good when your blood glucose readings drift down too.

Edited for spelling

I've got the no energy, very aching legs, runny nose....you get my drift. Well dosed up on paracetamol and First Defence. My FBG at least was an improvement on yesterday's 9.5 - I was at 7.7 fasting after going to bed on 6.5. Still not drinking coffee or tea and my pre breakfast reading was 7.9.
As you said @Brunneria I don't think we'll get a proper view until we are bug free. I've had my usual scrambled eggs and bacon rashers so that will be me until tonight.

@Brunneria - I am SO HAPPY for you that, after all that trial and error, you have found the right way for you to cope with your broken metabolism. :) :) Isn't it a shame we can't take them out (along with our pancreas and liver) and send them off to get fixed? I'm hopeful that our way of eating is going to be right for me - and even though I'm full of cold I know I'm not doing anything to raise my BG (and I can have a sneaky slice of LC cake to cheer myself up.)

@maglil55 - I think the best way forward for both of us (concerning eating) is to just carry on as normal and give ourselves a bit of TLC to get rid of the bug. Whats confusing me is the occasional day (or hour) that I seem to be better .... then it starts all over again but slightly differently.

I agree. I've now had an attack of the runs and my BG is up to 8.5. Just have to give it up as a lost cause for now. I'm having a warming cup of vegetable boullion right now.

About upset tummies - I have found hot drinks to be a bit....dangerous.... I had problems after hot bovril yesterday. :(

I've just had a salad probably not the best idea when my digestive system isn't working at optimum - but I found it refreshing and enjoyed it. Romaine lettuce, a little houmous, avocado, red onion and cucumber.

My BG is up and down and legs are murder. Couldn't even lie down they are aching so much. Currently using Revitive on them.
Following the theory of feed a cold I had rib eye, creamy mushroom sauce, steamed greens, aubergine chips and followed with a sugar free jelly, 3 strawberries and cream.
Eased my throat at least. Hubby is at the football so I may just go off and have a hot shower and an early night.

My FBG was up to 8.8 this morning! I ended up having 3 eggs scrambled with cheese, butter and cream in an effort to stop it rising any further. REALLY SCARY!

At the moment I've got bright pink eyes*, a red nose, a hacking cough, a painful chest, aching joints and bones and not much voice (not my best look) - so I phoned the doctor to make an appointment and was told the soonest would be a week next Monday (11 days!). If I want an emergency appointment (which seems a bit OTT for a cold) it would have to be with the awful 'diabetes expert' doctor who would, no doubt, blame low carbing - everything I have seen him for he's blamed on low carbing. Sorry... feeling sorry for myself.... :(

* The whites of my eyes are pink - weird.
