Hi I've been doing LCHF for a few weeks but got a little concerned about my my 6.6 cholesterol level in January, so went on low carb diet. To be honest the only carbs I eat are in the vegetables at evening meal mostly protein and veg, lunch omelettes with mushrooms bacon little cheese side salad,I've gone to BG readings mostly in 6s 6.3 today even 2 hrs later they don't change much.I have to have a fasting bloods done again in April because my doctor said my cholesterol is up from previous 5.5 last year, are my BG readings alright they I believe in the normal range, but my weight Has stalled for last 3 weeks, I do intermittent fasting everyday eating only between hours of 11 am and 5 pm occasionally I do a 24 hr fast but the weight is still stuck.
I have lost body fat initially but that too has stalled, any helpful advice and ideas on all this would be of great usefulness
Been diabetic for 17 years and upto finding this site never understood what to do,cannot say I'm much further along but I am trying. Lots of help on here so very much appreciated Thank you Everyone.K

Don't worry about cholesterol. Just worry about your blood sugar levels. High cholesterol does not correspond to heart disease. Your have more risk of dying with very low cholesterol than very high cholesterol. Check out the film Statin Nation and Statin Nation II for the facts about cholesterol.

The real problem with heart disease is inflammation caused by too much carbs. Cholesterol is just an agent to help repair the body. Small Dense cholesterol is the problem which cause plaque in the arteries, but many people have high levels of Cholesterol without having any of the Small Dense type. Having a high overall cholesterol level does not mean anything in itself. Strangely, some countries where the population has high cholesterol such as Japan have very low rates of heart disease.

I did 80 days on Atkins and my cholesterol went from 6.4 to 5.7 between the first and second blood tests.
Dr Atkins wrote that it would - in 'New Diet Revolution' - he saw it thousands of times - but no one seems to have believed him, not doctors and nurses certainly. He said that the ratio of good to bad would become better too - mine is ideal.

Thanks for info. Why do doctors put such importance on cholesterol, even the nurse said it wasn't that much over when she checked the LDL and HDL readings.K

I can't comment on your bsl readings as I'm not diabetic, though they sound quite moderate from my research, but otherwise I'm in the same weight loss position. Which veggies are you eating? Anything starchy? The occasional banana?

A fat fast may help, I guess, but only for a few days. No point developing an eating disorder. ;)

I know fasting might help your Blood sugars but it dosen't necessarily help the diet. Often weight loss stops because your not eating enough, the body goes into starvation mode and stores fat for the future. Try keeping a food diary for a few days and see what your actually eating. The opposite may be happening you may be eating too much.
The ideal pattern for weight loss is three small meals a day with two small snacks in between. I personally don't worry with the two snacks and have found that portion sizes is the key for me, as I'm loosing steadily on the three meals a day.
Good luck with it all.

Watch this extract from the film Statin Nation. It will give you a better understanding of cholesterol and how the hype around it has evolved.
The full film and Statin Nation II is available on dietdoctor.com

Mainly above ground vegetables occasionally carrots and turnip, not had any bananas cannot even remember last one I ate.K

@Granny_grump_ I have awful trouble losing weight too. But I have other medical conditions which block me losing weight. If I lose anything its a true miracle.

I have been doing Two meals a day and fasting 16 / 18 hrs everyday with occasional 24 hr fasts I started doing the fasting Has eating three meals a day I never lost weight either, you could be right and it could be portion size. I have kept a food diary since starting the diet, but all my life I've always struggled to lose weight.
In last three years put on around 3 stone stress etc.comfort eating, but I have lost around one and half stone, the last stone since finding this site,I have around 1 to 1 and half stone more to get back where I was 3 years ago it's a real struggle. K

Carrots and turnips are below-ground and may stall as much as potatoes, as can fruit. I actually hate banana's so not guilty on their behalf. I'm dropping veg as much as possible, don't really like them much anyway. Chili, garlic and ginger are my go-to's for anything plant-based.

Maybe it's just one of those really, really, irritating plateau's.

Hope so I will try a 24 hr fasting and see what happens.K

maybe you need to go low calories as well, thats what I have done... maybe if you can move more, but it helps counting ones calories and always know not to have eaten more than one burnes..

http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/DietMakeupCalc.php

some eat much more calories than they are awae of when going high fat... as 1 grams of fat is the double in calories as 1 gram of carbs or 1 gram of proteins....

many women that do not move a lot only need around 1700-1800 calories a day to maintain their weight...

calorie wise one need to be in a lack of 7700 calories to loose 1 kg... just worth knowing...
well it is not always calories in calories out...the body is more complex than that... but getting ones muscles into optimal shape do help burn a lot of calories when not even moving... so to do a little weight-lifting light at home evey day really pays even if one is not able to go to a fitness center or gym...

What happens is your insulin resistance improves until you start eating again. Then you have to fast again. Then more and more to keep up with insulin resistance. Fasting works, short term.
I've read once a fat cell is formed it is never destroyed. Just emptied.
Nack is not not form cell in first place. Carbs make far cells as does too much protein. I'm guessing too much fat must go somewhere.
Meals in moderation not filled with carbs is the winner, oh with a touch of exercise, stressfree exercise.

Portion size is key for me. I use an appetizer plate. Each meal has about 1/3-1/2 avocado, about 2 oz protein and a small amount of random above ground veggies. I do snack on a FEW nuts or pumpkin seeds but never a handful.

I think I only eat about 1000 cals, maybe less somedays but I eat when hungry and stop before full. I always picture a Lean Cuisine size meal. I do eat 80% fat though. Mostly avocado, nuts and mayo.

I always eat three small meals as I love food! I just keep them small and remember I know where to get more if I'm hungry.

Hello, I am very low carb and I too struggle with losing. The thing that seems to be my issue is that I have very high insulin. This is very common in type 2 diabetics and not usually tested for. The job of insulin is to put glucose into cells. A typical type 2 is insulin resistant so the insulin can't get the glucose into muscle cells and packs it into the fat cells instead. As long as insulin is high it is almost impossible for the body to access fat from the fat cells as the insulin is preventing it. This means no weight loss or a very hard and slow job. The only way to lower insulin levels is to cut out most carbs and eat moderate protein as both cause an insulin release. Carbs cause a much bigger and faster insulin release than protein and are not necessary while protein is necessary for the body to function. A fasting c-peptide test will tell you how much insulin you are producing but you may have to get it done privately.

Yes and fasting is one of the most effective ways to lower insuline if one can do a 3 days fasting This results in the optimal lowering of insuline actually around a 60% lowering the third day , But Then the fasting one day meal is only on 500 calories ... it is a rough ride But looking at the possitive aspect Then one loose more and can repeat maybe twice a month the 3 days of fasting and eat some more the rest of the time . According to Jason Fung it is not much more to go further than of the 3-4 days of fasting when it comes to lowering ones insuline
