Hi everyone

Ive decided it's time to take control and sort out my diabetes

I'm 35

Diagnosed when I was 30 with type 2 diabetes with a BMI of 36

Parents diagnosed with DM2 in 50's, parents Indian descent from Trinidad. Which means my genetics are against me.

Have a young family and was busy at work. Blood sugars all over the place and not that i didn't care but didn't pay much attention.

We've moved house and city and new GP really proactive, seen the community team and really looked at it. Asked to keep a blood sugar diary, started on a new medicine. Found out about the diabetes diet after buying a book of amazon. Ive now stopped my flicks side, self funded a about freestyle libra and making real changes to the way I live. Second baby due in 3 weeks and I want to be here to see them grow up!

I'm looking for support, ideas and keeping on track. I love supporting others, I am a health care professional with a good knowledge base but I know Ive learnt so much recently.

My biggest piece of advice is get a referral to specialist care, even if a one off appointment every minute was gold for me and I never got that at my GP.

Hi @Richram and welcome to the forum. It's great you have a proactive GP, and that you are taking control of your condition.
A lot of us on here have found that adopting a Low Carbohydrate High Fat (LCHF) approach to eating has reduced our blood sugars, and weight too often.
Have a read round the threads to see how this works and ask any questions you want to. The people on here are friendly and supportive.

Hi @Richram Welcome. Great that you have decided to take control. The Freestyle Libre is something I'll will try soon. How are you getting on with it?

I really like it, though a little obsessed. I know the evidence about testing in type 2 is that overall it doesn't improve things and it's short lived by many. But some of this is probably the pain in the fingers.

Libra is expensive but amazing. I plan to use it intermittently every few months for a month to make sure I'm on track really

I've managed to come of my gliclazide with the low carb but normal fat type diet and loose weight. I haven't replaced all my calories with fat but some so still calorie deficit.

So hopefully no need to test for driving etc now and my fingers love me again

Welcome.

I use the Freestyle Libre in much the same way you are intending, on a part time intermittent basis. I am a diet only T2 and have found it invaluable and because of it I have lowered my readings from getting up until lunch time quite significantly, so for me it has improved things.

Good luck, you have the right approach and should do well. :)

I plan to have a long time controlling my diabetes by diet - and I am almost 66 - so I am so glad that it is an easy diet to follow, and that there are such things as low carb Lidl protein rolls and also low carb chocolate. Most other carbs are no trouble to resist, or at least to restrict to rational levels - those being grapes and strawberries. I do not have both in the house at the same time, so if I do give in to temptation there is at least some hope. It is just a matter of being sensible, not super powered.
Now that I have got my Hba1c down I have seen my average blood glucose levels falling, so something is actually getting better, and I don't need to take tablets. My quality of life is so much better eating low carb, I can really recommend it, and with a new baby on the way no one should need to be twisting your arm to get you to avoid carbs.
