I can see Muir Gray's POV on this, particularly after my diabetes check-up last week. The nurse (a new one and rather nice) was delighted with my progress and even more delighted when she realised I wasn't on medication.

She handed me the Hba1C form and the specimen bottle, and told me I would need to make an appointment with the specialist doctor at the practice to discuss results.

The specialist doctor is the one I refuse to see; she insisted I saw him because he specialises in "chronic" cases and the doctor I usually see is "just a GP". I argued that I am not a chronic case at this stage and am more than happy to see said "just a GP" as overall this one has been broadly supportive. She took my point.

Unfortunately our healthcare providers love to categorise us even though we all have very different needs.

Both type 1 and type 2 are very serious conditions, sadly there is nothing that can be done to cure my type 1, but type 2s can do a lot more, i think he was saying that type 2 should be given different name as it does confuse people

Put his book in the smallest room in the house - someone will find a wee use for it. OR tear the pages out and hang them on a nail next to the throne - then wait for the penny to drop.

Personally I look on it as being a condition or ailment. (alimentary of course). His advice is not that far removed from what the Newcastle Diet people are claiming, so he is closer to the mark compared to many so called 'experts'. I have not yet given up all my meds yet, but diet changes have allowed me to significantly reduce my pill count, and my GP is asking me to take the next step and drop another pill from my scrip Far cry from 18 months ago when I was being referred for insulin therapy as a last resort.

I just wish said learned gentleman would define what he means by diet. I believe he is in the Eatwell#2 camp, which I don't think is helpful. But then we are all on a learning curve. Do you Bant?
Me? No, I don't Bant. I am just winging it :cat:

It used to be called "Sugar Diabetes" (in my lifetime) and centuries ago (NOT in my lifetime for the avoidance of doubt ;) ) "The Devils P155ing"

I concede that point John, sorry to be such an idealist! :);) D.
Nothing wrong with being an idealist.:)

I just couldn't resist the opportunity to use example and exemplar in the same sentence. :)

Seems to me that confuse the medical profession too.
There's nothing also that could be done to cure the type 2, but it's true that the condition could be prevented, and could be put in remission without the use of insulin.

Unfortunately if medical doctors and specialist are giving wrong advices or no advices at all to the patient is the bigger problem, especially if combined with the idea that if one has t2 or is fat is because is a lazy glutton and deserves the illness.

The word diabetes was first recorded in 1425, and in 1675, the Greek mellitus, “like honey,” was added, to reflect the sweet smell and taste of the patient's urine. So hence the name sugar.
I have mentioned this before, but two trips to A&E, ended up with both medical professional's (when asked of my medical condition's, I said diabetes) both said "type 2" !! it appeared they didn't know of another type, so that didn't make me feel very confident at all

I'm sure that doesn't make you feel very good does it?

Imagine how someone must feel to have a healthy diet and lifestyle but still get diagnosed with type 2. Then they have to hear comments (like yours) that suggest having type 2 is a choice.

I'm sure that would be pretty frustrating.

That I find very hard to take. I wasn't overweight and yes my diet was too like the recommended eat well plate but that was being pushed as healthy.

Aaarggghh! T2s don't deserve diabetes either! This is a support forum. Why on earth do you think you are being punished? It is what it is, a condition that some people have to live with. Instead of thinking why me, how about why not me? Be thankful you don't have to live with being obese as well and have ignorant people telling you it's all your fault. Imagine how that would feel.

You take too much notice of the media rubbish. By no means all T2s had unhealthy diets and poor life styles. There are many different causes, and how anyone can say they would never have a T2 diagnosis because they eat a healthy diet etc. is fooling themselves.. You would do well to do some reading before making such a sweeping statement. This condition is with us all for life, not just you.

I would suggest then you have type 1, i think more research needs to be done on all the type 1 and type 2, having to inject insulin 5/6 times a day and finger prick almost every hour isnt great, but there is a line between the two, i am sorry but thats how it looks to me, i dont intend to offend im just fed up with all the injecting, all the finger pricking, all the highs and the awful lows and all the blooming carb counting.
