New on here but Diabetic for 22 years

Hi I have been on this forum a lot over the years but never posted, I have had a lot of advice so thank you all for that. I am coming here as I need some help and advice on something so I will post another thread for that. Apart from that I have had Diabetes for 22 years and have been told by 3 Doctors I am type 1 and 2 doctors I am type 2! I get poked and prodded a lot for tests as I basically eat what I want and my bloods don't really change (I am guessing they will one day). Anyway nice to finally join and if anyone has any questions I'll happily answer them.

I have only very recently been diagnosed with type 2. But I cannot eat vegetables as everyone suggests! I enjoy my bad foods to much to be able to give them up. Has made me feel depressed & confused. When you say you eat what you want.... do you mean literally anything? Ie currys & rice/ bread / potatos etc etc? Also do you often check your blood sugar levels? I cant give up my 'naughty foods' but at the same time i'm scared of the consequences

Hi and yes I literally eat sugar, chocolate, biscuits etc every single day. My last visit with the specialist he looked at my sugar levels and they were 6 and he then asked to see my food diary and he couldnt believe it, I am assuming eventually it will catch up to me and I will have to start being good but no one can understand why this is happening when I dont produce any insulin. I am also on 2 injections a day with fast and slow release combined and have been told this is the worst type of insulin for good control!
I hope you get through the depression and confusion soon I really do, talking about it is the best way to deal with it.
 
Hi @mycool86 - What works for one person may not work so well for someone else. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your Blood Sugars before a meal and then 2 hours later, this will give you a good idea of how your body has reacted to that meal.
It also helps if you keep a Food Diary - write down the contents of the meal and your blood sugar results both before meals and after.

Hi. I loved a lot of "bad foods" too. They didn't give me diabetes...long term steroid treatment for a separate condition has...but they are what spikes my blood sugar..and that's why I seldom (bot not never) eat them. I went onto a low carb diet and stopped my meds (having informed my doctor) and that got my blood sugar levels under control..so now I have the odd treat and I am way less strict. I have the odd curry with a small amount of chips. I can just about cope with a croissant if my level is low. We all differ and testing before and a couple of hour after eating is the ONLY way to find out. I'm not sure you are aware but...you can eat beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fish if its not battered, mushrooms, some cheese, cream, and maybe..maybe a small amount of pasta. Avocados are good for you one very level. I'm not big on vegetables either. If you're okay with lettuce and leafy veg (the best kind for us) put a little french dressing on it or vinegar and walnuts. Most nuts are ok. Do NOT eat root vegetables - they can and probably will increase the levels. Investigate, there's loads of nice stuff. What I am saying is..I get it, honestly, but try for a while to at least cut theme right down and see what the difference is to your levels - that might encourage you. If you can't sustain it..at least cutting down can only help.

Do you take insulin to manage your diabetes?

It is possible as a T1 to eat an extremely varied diet (that does comprise of some poor food choices) and have respectable HbA1c's. But that only happens providing you understand how to dose your insulin efficiently and have good carb counting skills. Does this sound like your situation?

Where is the confusion arising from regarding your diabetes type?

The confusion was when I was diagnosed at 18 they started me on insulin then I kept having hypos so they stopped and put me on diet alone then a few years later they said you should try again on a small amount and by small I mean 4 units twice a day. They couldn't work out why I wasn't needing insulin or tablets as they had found out my pancreas had stopped. They send my blood off all over the place for tests. And no I don't ever change my dose of insulin no matter what I eat. I always have 22 units and to be totally honest hardly ever test my blood. I know eventually it will catch up but I am annoying the experts at the moment and after 22 years I think they have given up! Also I wouldn't have a clue where to start with counting calories
