Hi I am Gary, been T2 for over 10 years. I have been a member here for a little while, but, i haven't made myself known to fellow diabetics, mainly because i never know what to say about the condition. I have been researching DM and it's effect on the body. and as you probably all well know it's never good reading. I am impressed with the findings of a LCHF diet though. been reading, Dr Jason Fung and Tim Noakes. and various others. just over 3 weeks ago i embarked on this LCHF crusade as my Blood Sugars were so diverse, i must admit i drank heavily especially beer. and have promised myself to abstain for 3 months and follow THE diet, in the last 3 weeks since stopping drinking and eating VLCHF i have found my blood sugars have never been above 7 mmols in the morning, and keeping them around 6.0 and 4.5 during the day. no noticeable spikes after eating. i have reduced my Insulin injections from over 200 units per day. to 40 units morning and 35 in the evening and this regime is working great with my Blood sugar control. i have only lost a minimal amount of weight in 3 weeks around 8 pounds in the first week and it's still hovering around the same mark after 3 weeks as it was after the 1st week. i don'tt know if this is normal. esecially as i am still injecting insulin. a well known fat storage hormone. but i have to be hones the neuropathy in my feet has definitely lessened in intensity. I actually walk without having to hobble around. so that's a plus. but i just wondered if anyone else has taken with the LCHF diet and found losing weight to be an issue. and i have followed the rules, i only eat real high fat foods, Beef, Pork, Lamb, Fish never cut the fat off. and mostly cruciferous vegetables, no root veg. i have cut out, potatoes rice bread rolls cakes anything with sugar is a no no. i may need to get my metabolism boosted as i am pretty sedentary. so i might have to start looking at exercise sessions. thanks for reading Gaz

We are all different and some lose easier than others . I tried to resist weighing other than once a week as I got a bit depressed although I have now lost 4 stone in about 6 months but it was erratic for example I was same weight for 6 weeks then dropped 7lbs in a week and then for 8 weeks after that no further loss of weight then lost another 7lbs weight in one week . I took the view as long as blood sugars are OK I tried not to worry about weight loss

I found I was eating a bit too much protein and I found the suggestion 0. 8 per kilo of the weight to which I want to be worked for me . For me it seemed to help to keep hydrated so at least one and half litres a day and even more in this hot weather..

So my suggestion is keep up the good work and try not to get too worried about the weight loss if your blood sugars are good.

I can't eat loads of saturated fat without gaining weight. Many of us eat low carb, MODERATE protein and enough healthy fats to satisfy and no more. I tend to get most of my fats from avocado, olive oil, a few nuts and a little cheese occasionally. I DO cut all visible fat of my red meats and chicken ( I never eat the skin)
I don't eat bacon, douse my foods in butter and cheese, cream , fatty sausages, etc. Mono fats work best for me and NORMAL amounts of fat. If you have fat on your body and over eat dietary fat your body will never gonto your bodies fat stores for energy. If weight loss is desired don't over eat fat. Dietary fat is only meant to replace carb calories so we don't starve as low carb and moderate protein don't provide enough calories without some healthy fats.
We are all different but you can experiment with cutting saturated fat and moderating your protein to .8-1 kg LEAN Indy mass

Portions are important. Low carb higher fat still has to be controlled portions.

Someone once posted : make a normal meal and push the carbs off ( or don't make them of course). Made perfect sense to me.

If I want to lose weight I cut fat as many of us low carbers do when wanting to lose weight.

Many find while they don't count calories, when they do they only eat less than around 1500 calories or so a day, as fat is so filling they don't want to eat more.

After a very impressive weight loss in the first few weeks I found it a very slow weight loss on Lcmf. I had never dieted before which would have helped in the initial stages and I actual do not want to lose a lot of weight quickly as I am looking for a new"lifestyle" diet for all time and no flab handles. I am in my 60's and do around 5 hours sedate exercise pd so I keep to protein of 1g per kg target weight. I understand .8 is for under 50's of average activity and 1.2 for over 70's. People who do a lot of exercise should eat a bit more than those who do not.

I think exercise is one of the keystones of good diabetes management and if you can do 150mins brisk walking in a week you should try to meet that target. I have a leg problem so anything more than a toddle is out but I do a lot of toddle and if I remember get myself out of breath before I start so the blood is pumping and muscles working to increase their oxygen capacity. That might be all you need to do to kick start your weight loss. I have never weighed anything or counted the calories and did find I was losing as much (as in .1's kg) weight on High fat as I do on moderate fat. Better, olive oil and fat from the joint only.

It may be worth doing the food diary, calorie count routine for a couple of weeks

Hi. There is a thread on here somewhere called "support thread for those who have trouble losing weight" or something like that. Maybe someone could link that for you. It is early days for you though, give things a chance and remember that not everyone drops weight quickly no matter what the diet is. Welcome to the forum.

Hi,
Here is the link to the thread @chalup mentioned.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/thr...o-dont-lose-weight.112253/page-7#post-1477750

But I think it is a bit early for you to find that that thread relevant. Which is good news! :D

You've only been going a few weeks, and your blood glucose levels look great. The decrease in insulin is very impressive too! Definite congratulations.

Maybe give it some more time, tweak your food intake a bit. Try a week on lower carbs, or a week on more exercise, or a week on a bit less fat, and see how your body responds.

I can remember seeing posts from people on here who found their weight loss only started properly after several weeks on low carb, while others lose quickly to start with, so a lot depends on our individual reactions to the change in eating.

I am having trouble losing weight, but I think that is actually a good sign as it indicates reducing insulin resistance. I am 7 months from diagnosis, and if I get to one year and still no resumption of significant weight loss then I will start to make greater reductions in carbs and increase activity.
At the moment my BG levels seem very unstable and although my Hba1c places me just under the level for diabetes I seem to have reverted into the state I was in during my 20s, when I suspect I had RH but was told that I was overdoing things or not getting enough rest, burning the candle at both ends and suchlike platitudes.

but i just wondered if anyone else has taken with the LCHF diet and found losing weight to be an issue.

Well I am well into LCHF+Intermittent fasting for 21 months. My weight has remain around 75kg, same as when diagnosed.

But glucose level are well in the normal non-diabetic range...except when I carb up.

Hi all. Many thanks for some uplifting advice people. i shall read and listen to all advice and react accordingly, trying different methods of LCHF dietary thinking. obviously try sticking to one regime for a length of time and see how it fares. interesting days ahead, and i am so glad i found this forum, look forward to discussing results and hopefully not too many failures with you guys. Happy Low Carbing people. cheers Gaz

Hi @Gazzamius I didn't lose weight for about the first 4 weeks, then I started losing around 1-1.5 lbs a week. More important is that you have significantly lowered your bs levels.
If your fat is mainly around your middle, that can mean you have visceral fat around your liver and pancreas which would impact on your insulin resistance. but stick with the LCHF and you should see your weight start to fall.

Not sure if you have heard of Dr Jason Fung ?
If not check out his website. He has had a lot of success with longer term Type 2's and weight loss mainly achieved by getting them off insulin through fasting and low carb.
https://intensivedietarymanagement.com
There are a lot of video lectures around of him explaining his technique and could well be very helpful in your situation.
You have made an amazing start and great news on the improvements in neuropathy. Well done.

hi, well done on your BG levels.
as others said, it's early days but wight loss will drop off, busy just needs to understand whats happening.
I started a few weeks ago, no loss then suddenly noticeable fat loss around abdomen & 5lbs lost..
I've kicked up my exercise & do cardio/weights 5x a week, protein shakes, creatine etc, no effect on BG but slowed weight loss as muscle mass finally returning to what I had a few years ago..

keep going, your doing well & I know everyone's different but you should start seeing noticeable changes soon.. good luck

Many thanks Bulkbiker. yes i bought an ebook of Jason Fung "the complete guide to fasting" after trying my 3 month experiment with LCHF... i am definitely going to see if this works even better. it's makes very informative reading. and contrary to the Medical associations beliefs.......... kicks conventional low fat high carb diets for six. The medical professionals just don't want to accept this LCHF diet actually works. Guess it means a lot of the big corporate money making companies still want to make money out of people becoming obese and diabetic. i personally have had enough. wish i had learned about this years ago. and with the low BG readings i am getting i am over the moon. my feet are getting more sensation in them every day. and i can feel myself getting better. Good luck everybody doing this, lets change the world for diabetics ehh !

There are more and more who are coming round to our way of thinking but it is a slow process and until the powers that be - NICE and the NHS - realise that their way isn't necessarily the only way then it will only be the mavericks who do their research and adopt the LCHF/IF way which seems to work so much better than pills.
Check out this map
https://phcuk.org/map/
there are some around.
Good luck with the fasting if you decide to try it. Obviously beware of hypos and check with your doc if it's possible to come off the insulin therapy for a while when you are fasting.. you may be able to convert them too!

How are you certain that fat isn't the reason you gained weight?

My new dietician uses carbs and cals book for her patients.

Mine has loads of notes in for which keeps carbs under 10gs per 100g foods.
I changed from lchf to low carb, low fat with xenical/orilstat and I've lost 9lb on it so far but since xmas I dropped cheese, nuts, pork scratchings and fatty meats, oh and cream.
Hence I've lost just under 2 stones.
I've stormed my target for bariatric surgery requirements. I'm now hovering in the just under 20st mark.
Pre 2 kids I was 18st but hoping bariatric durgery can mimic my weight loss years of under 600cals per day to try and put my diabetes in remission.
Let's see.
I'm awaiting letter for surgeon's clinical decision for me.

Ps. I'm unable to exercise due to bulging discs and scatica. Walking is very very painful even on max tramadol.

Hello Good People. going into 4th week of VLC/HF . and my weight is basically still the same as i lost in the first, week. also my blood sugars are elevated.... the last 3 days, i am hovering between 8 to 10 mmols. never seem to increase or decrease between these levels. and i have stuck religiously to the diet. 2 meals a day my carb intake is probably lower than 10 grams. and i am eating quite high fat meals, belly pork slices, steak....fat left on. eggs fried in olive oil, chicken all skin left on. etc etc... i might need to reduce portion sizes. but i thought i would stay with this regime for the 1st 4 weeks. not that bothered about my weight just yet. was just pleased my blood sugars were coming out around 5 & 6 ... even first thing in the morning. is this a normal trend. ?? thanks in advance. Gaz

I add on nuts and cheese.
I think a lot of overweight people do.

I remember watching an american programme on 4 contestants had to go against each other to lose weight and none of them lost anything.
They stopped them eating cheese and they started losing.

I know lchf needs fat but I think some fats make wrong fat cells.

Try eliminating a food from your diet as you could be sensitive to that one food?
