Good Morning

I'm not sure which section to put this question and also am unsure about even asking it

But.. does anyone here find the food they eat (I'm prediabetic and on lchf) cloying and disgusting? I feel pretty repulsed by food and don't want to eat. Then I get so hungry I binge eat on nuts and cheese. Sounds like a first world problem I know but it's impacting on my well being.

Any suggestions?

Question is what were you eating? It is a massive change in diet for some to combat it and keep you pre diabetic so hang on to that for dear life. There is a huge amount of ideas on the site that might help you

I don't find my food repulsive but I low carb, medium fat.
What exactly are you eating, if you like cheese and nuts they are a good low carb start.

I have binge eating disorder so I don't think it's so it's not just due to a diet change. Although binge eating certainly was the cause of the state of my blood sugars now ! I used to eat generally low carb before but peppered with a regular binge. Now I just struggle with digesting anything. Maybe it's just a case of living with it, I made this bed!

Pretty healthy stuff, meat , cheese, fish , eggs, veg , full fat yogurt , nuts , some berries, some cream sometimes. Textbook stuff ;) It just grosses me out (as the young folk say!) for some reason.

Hi@violetviolet
I have days where I find food unappealing, I think that is normal some days.
But you say it is impacting on your life so that is not right.
Tagging @asortafairytale as she moderates the eating disorder forum and may know useful info for you.

Thanks- I could use some of the zest for life that's shown on your profile pic! :)

Well what you are eating now looks good from a blood sugar standpoint, but as you say, it grosses you out. I sometimes feel like that with the normal food I eat- I can't face it. When that happens, it's usually coz I've had too much of the same thing.
Could you try eating something totally different? Like if I can't face the normal food I eat, which is very similar to what you listed as your diet, I will get some fried Tempeh or spicy chicken wings, or get eggplant fried in chilli oil with fishball paste. Smoked sausage, bacon, whisky, stilton. All very strong flavours that appeal after my reasonably bland fare. I don't mean to be facile- I know there's more to binging and being repulsed by food than just boredom, but I have found that just looking outside the usual box can keep me eating my meals. Might be worth a look?

Thanks, that's a very good point and a different perspective. I think because I am quite fearful of food and eating I do make it as bland and lacklustre as possible. If I make in too enjoyable I fear I may never stop eating ! Maybe it's time to look at variety and tastes and new recipes and experiment to give myself time to find out what if there's enjoyable tastes I had never thought of. Apart from the pleasure aspect the more variety the more balanced nutrition will be. Cheers !

I had a bit of a lightbulb moment yesterday. Would normally keep it to myself but just in case it resonates with anyone here goes.... I think I have been thinking about food like an alcoholic thinks of booze. To change how I am feeling and give me a buzz- despite knowing how awful a junk food hangover is. It's not foods job to comfort me, its to give me nutrients in an appetising way. I'm expecting my meals to feel like chowing down on a packet of biscuits used to (ie a sugar rush of delight following by nausea, bloated body and digestive distress and bingers remorse.... Oh and putting me on the road to diabetes)

The answer I suppose is to find other ways of dealing with stress and acknowledging that a lifetime of comfort eating is going to be a tough habit to break.

Maybe look into using herbs and spices to jazz up your food.
It would be difficult to binge on many low carb foods, as they are quite bulky, or they lower your appetite very quickly.
It might be worth looking at treatments for binging. Chromium supplements, L-glutamine, B vitamins were what Dr Atkins used, and he saw quite a few people with eating problems.

Thats it in a nutshell, I am never hungry on lchf but still have the emotional need to cram food in. Its a whole mindset shift I need. Or maybe I should start recreational drinking

I will look at those supplements, thank you. I never think of reading about the work of Dr Atkins. Any good websites to start with?

Certainly don't just live with it, if your unsure that the digestion issue is related to your eating disorder ask your gp to investigate further, they may refer you over to the Gastroenterology Clinic where further tests will be carried out. Good luck.

There is a facebook low carb forum which is very friendly, but there is a lot of information out there if you just google - or use the search engine of your choice.
The old Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book came out in several versions, but they all seem good. You can find them online or in the files of the low carb forum. The more modern Atkins Corporation products are not something I would recommend.

Good point thank you. I did wonder about IBS playing a part too, will mention it at the next appt.
