Low carb Indian Food

OK so I'm off to the Indian this weekend for a regular curry with mates, however this will be my first visit since starting the low carb diet. Normally a visit to the curry house would involve plenty of poppadums, rice and naan, but I guess I'll be kicking those into touch. A bit of reading suggests a kebab of some sort would be good to start, maybe tandoori chicken with a salad for main, but basically I'm after anybody's advice on what to eat and what NOT to eat in the curry house, form a low carb perspective

I usually have a dryish dish like chicken tikka with a wet veg curry like aubergine (brinjal) bahji or spinach. My local does a minced lamb and spinach dish - keema sag which is great.
 
Yes definitely avoid the pops, nan and rice, also beware of sauce based curries as they very often contain sugar, as Bulkbiker has said dry dishes are best so mixed tandoori or kebab, I will also have a sag paneer or cauliflower bhaji if i'm missing the sauce bit.
 
The sharwoods poppadoms 8 in a pack which are in most supermarkets are 3.2g of carbs each. Mainly because they are only 8.5g in weight. I find a couple of them OK because of the fat that comes with them, usually have them with lime pickle which is 2.5g per 100g. Not sure about the ones in a restaurant which will be twice the size and I'd stay away from the mango sauce.
 
Poppadum with raita, fresh onion chutney, garlic pickle (no vampires on me) or lime pickle. Some sort of fish curry eg Tandoori salmon with vegetable curries and salad. I had real trouble with the idea of no more biriyani etc but got over it eventually. I would rather feel well and maintain an HbA1c in the non-diabetic range. I do miss a full-on curry feast though!
Also, no beer!
 
I think I would go for a tandoori mixed grill plus a salad.

Or have a day (or two) of intermittent fasting before going (if meds allow) so giving the your liver 24hrs to make space to store the curbs. (But don't think you can do this every day and only for people who have BG under reasonable control.)
 
Chicken Tikka dry, their cauliflower dish and a salad , mint yogurt to dip the food in..Might next time sneak in a Poppadom from supermarket now somebody on here said that two are pretty low lol ; ) If I go for a Chinese I usually go for stir fried vegetables like the garlic broccoli that is dry with dry ribs and a Chinese plain omelet.

Hi Nick I am a big curry eater. My personal experience is that it is worth talking to the restaurant. In most cases I have found that regular curries like Madras, Vindaloo and Phall are all okay with no added sugar. Avoid Massala, Korma and Naans but Chapatis and Rotis are made with wholemeal flour so I can tolerate these. For what it is worth I usually order a veg vindaloo and a main of chicken or land tikka and a chapati which I sometimes don't finish and this suits my levels. Good luck and enjoy!
 
I find with Indian food and Chinese food, how much I eat as well as what I eat, is key. For what ever reason I have trouble portion controlling.
I now eat only half of what I order and take home the rest.
 
Thanks for all the advice guys. In the end I had a rashmi kebab (a minced lamb pattie with an omelette on top plus salad and yoghurt) then sashlick chicken (chicken tikka pieces with onions, peppers and tomatoes, but no sauce - salad and yoghurt also) plus a side of veggie curry - had to leave the spuds. All very nice and I left feeling far less bloated than I normally do after and Indian. Oh yeah and a couple of Kingfishers.......apart from them, still keeping the carbs at bay, and found I'd lost half a stone last week, so that's encouraging
