Seeds - a question please.

I follow a LC/HF way of eating and consume a lot on nuts and seeds. My question is, although linseeds, chia seeds and other small seeds are a great source of roughage/fibre, is it advisable to sometimes crush them to extract the nutrients as well as eating them whole?

I never eat them whole. I only use flaxseed (linseed) but I always buy the milled ones and sprinkle it on my food.

OK, thank you! They are very hard to crush - didn't know you can get milled ones. Might continue to eat them whole as well for 'roughage'.
Many thanks for your prompt replies, Bluetit1802 :)

The milled flaxseed works wonders for me. I have to be careful not to overdo it!

I do both whole and milled flaxseeds (Linwoods), along with Tesco's sunflower seeds, just because they are cost effective and the reseal capabilities.

May I ask how much flaxseed you would take in one day and can you add some to soups and stews?

Probably one teaspoon but not every day. I usually add them to salads and yoghurt but see no reason why they could not be added to soups and stews as well.

From what I've read in the past, they have to be milled to get the nutrients or they just pass through. This was years ago but makes sense.

I would think a coffee grinder would work. I always just bought milled.

Or a pepper or salt table mill may work too. I find Aldi is quite cheap on theirs, and you get to use the pepper too.

I buy the milled and sprinkle it on all sorts of different foods, rater like you would with salt and pepper. I've just had a tin of salmon with cherry toms and mayo. I cut the toms in half, sprinkled on the flaxseed and some salt and pepper, then sprinkled more on the salmon. It can easily be added to soups and stews, also yogurts, eggs, and anything you like. I did try it on strawberries and cream but that didn't work. The seed went all peculiar in the cream. The recommended serving is 15g. I have about 20g . That gives me 113 calories, 4g protein, 9g fat (1g is saturated) and 6g fibre. This is Linwoods Milled Flaxseed.

(see how useful food diaries are! I got those amounts from my diary of December 2014!!!!!!!!!!!)

I don't think milled are anymore expensive than whole.
I always kept mine in the freezer too.

Some of our stores have coffee grinders for when we buy whole coffee beans. Thinking you could sneak it in those too if you have them. SSSSHHHHH

Whole flaxseeds have a longer shelf life than milled.
Our food processor has a grinding attachment which works well.

As I have difficulty with nuts I have started making my own peanut butter which turned out quite nice.

Thank you all. My youngest has a Nutribullet and I sometimes use it to grind up black peppercorns so it should have no probe with flaxseed but as you say, it comes milled, too. I have started throwing in a good pinch of Chia seeds into my soups and stews, however, sunflower seeds I just buy for the birds as I don't like them. Every little helps.
