Hi

Yesterday night before bed my bg was 5, but this morning it is 5.9. I didn't have any food after bed. Any idea why bg gone up in the morning?

Regards

There are many things which affect BG - food, stress, illness, drugs, exercise (whilst doing it and afterwards), something on your fingers (including some soaps), meter inaccuracies...

For this reason, I try not to react to a single odd reading but look for trends when I do the same thing.

Use the search function to look up Dawn Phenomena. This may explain your slightly higher reading this morning.

Dr Jason Fung has a simple explanation for this...

Think about it this way. The Dawn Phenomenon is simply moving sugar from body stores (liver) into the blood. That’s it. If your body stores are filled to bursting, then you will expel as much of that sugar as possible. By itself it is neither good nor bad. It is simply a marker that your body has too much sugar. Solution? Simple. Either don’t put any sugar in (LCHF) or burn it off (Fasting). Even better? LCHF + IF.

This is a light hearted reply from Mr Pedantic.

Those readings are entirely consistent with Dawn Phenomena. Your liver is putting glucose into the blood stream to help you get out of bed (an over simplification). It's that or you've been raiding the larder in your sleep and although that was meant in a light hearted jokey way, some people do eat while sleep walking.

I saw a program about people struggling to lose weight and they showed video of someone sleep walking and raiding the fridge. You'd think they'd notice the next day but I guess the program wouldn't be so entertaining.

Every day learning new things from here . I didn't have a good sleep last night, does that explain why high is my bg?

It is hardly a high BG level it is good mine is always between 6 and 7 when I get up no matter what I do . There are plenty of people here who would be happy to have your levels in the morning

Don't quite know where this sits in the scheme of things but when I started LCHF about a month ago my personal test readings were 'good' - in the 5's overnight fasting, barely rising after a very low carb meal. Over the past few days things have gone slightly haywire. I seem to have 'acquired' dawn phenomena where readings are up in the 7s first thing in the morning.
I'm still trying to work it out but after an eggy breakfast readings drop again. Towards lunch, after a reasonably physical morning's work, readings are up again (had an 8.6) - then appear to drop after a small LC lunch (3 or 4 slices of meat and a bit of cheese) to 6. I appear to have a roller-coaster liver dump - but according to Jason Fung this is no bad thing till I get my whole system rather better balanced and I've shifted some liver excess.
The other thing that may have affected things is a flu jab a week ago, since when I've been feeling a bit peeky.
Overall nothing too alarming I hope, but maybe just the nest stage of a journey to try and understand and manage it all.

You are correct in your assessment, until your body adjusts to its new lifestyle and gets use to the control you need to be healthier. It will rebel because it is missing the carbs!

There is a thread about the flu jab on the forum and the way it affects blood glucose control. It knocked me back!
