Hi newly diagnosed and introduced myself recently. I am on the dreaded Metamorfin but fortunately not experiencing too many stomach problems and a couple of high blood pressure drugs. Have started low carb diet with blessing of DN and testing (kit supplied foc with supply of strips etc.). However i have found i am very short tempered in the morning! Anything before breakfast and up to an hour after can cause me to fly off the handle no matter how small. Anyone else experienced this? Normally I am fairly laid back.

Before I had my BG undercontrol I had a fairly bad temper. I generally was feeling unwell so it was hard to cope with day today.
I notice when I have a false hypo I feel the same.
What is your BG when you feel like this?

Hi @Charly1 ,

What numbers are throwing up in the morning & after breakfast...?

Are you new to the BP drugs? I've known some people who have become really bad tempered when put on them and they've had to go back and get them changed and then they've been okay.

If my bloods go down to around 5 then I get ratty.

Fairly new just started 2.5mg Ramipril to go with the 5mg Alidmipone so could be the issue

Hi Charly1, I am on 10mg of Amlopidine and have been since April with no change to moods until I started Metformin 3 weeks ago and now I want to bite every bodies head off, nausea, loss of appetite, raised bs, swollen ankles and constipation = so unhappy.

Interesting i have been on Metformin 3.5 weeks and have the same reaction. Could be just the change of lifestyle coming to a head or i am turning into Victor Mildrew

I have become very short tempered since being on Metaformin for one month . But maybe we are blaming the drugs when in fact its just the mental shock of diagnosis and change of diet and lifestyle.

Even none diabetics have mood swings with new drugs. They sometimes settle down or need changing.
Hayfever med makes loads of people bad tempered, I've heard.

Monitor bgs and moods sounds a brilliant idea. Definitely worth mentioning to your gp.
Hope it goes a quickly as it started.

I think you should have a word with your dn or gp. Swollen ankles while on metformin needs to be reported.

Wow. I missed that. I'm off to bed. I'm totally shattered.
Yes. Definitely needs reporting @Hammer1964 . Let us know what he/she says.

I'm wondering if severe water tummy is off metformin. I'll do same as dn said not insulin related.
Maybe I just cannot tolerate it after nearly 20yrs of taking it. In my week break from it I had no swelling but weight gain as its an appetite suppressant.
Very interesting.

I've recently stopped taking Metformin because of severe side effects while traveling 2 months ago (no fun at all). After 20 years of Metformin, mostly balanced by the side effects of cocodomol, I cut right back on cocodomol because I just totally relaxed for three weeks (apart from actual travel). The runs ensued.

So, Metformin free and my temper is very short when my BG is elevated, perhaps only in the 8s and 9s. Sleep has a lot to do with my temper, the BP meds make to get up 3 times a night and if I don't get back to sleep, even I don't like me.

I'm now going to start Metformin SR, I will see if it makes a difference, to mood and BG.

Yes tiredness and disturbed sleep makes me unbareable too. When I think back the night feeds 4yrs ago started off well but soon turned to bad mood once my sleep need was disrespected.
Having a baby at 42yrs old and diabetic on insulin, now that's moody potential, too.

Tiredness is my only cause for short temperness, luckily.

I was uncharacteristically short-tempered (indeed, angry at times) during the months leading up to diagnosis. This apparently is a symptom of uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes in some people. There were "real things" going on in my life that could "explain" the anger. But in retrospect, I think it is possible that the anger was in part a T2D symptom. If you are recently diagnosed and your BG is still not fully controlled, this might be a factor in your short-temperedness, in my opinion.

I went to see the DN today and she said it is the cholesterol tablet causing bad moods, swollen ankles, muscles aches, joint pain, a feeling of can’t be bothered, chest pain, headaches and constipation but the Metformin is causing nausea, stomach aches and loss of appetite. So I am to stop the Lipitor immediately and have been put on Metformin SR and go back in two weeks.

amlodipine gave me really painful and swollen ankles. I went back to GP within 2 weeks of starting it and am now on lacidipine which is so much better.
