Hello everyone, I am new to this forum.

I just have a quick question and I am very concerned about it. I am a 30 years old male. My BMI is normal. I am just not that much active or into healthy diet (I play a lot of computer games). My dad is diabetic for years now.

I have a problem with mild anxiety and stress which causes me to feel panicky sometimes. Recently I have been going through a stress phase where I couldn't sleep properly for 3-4 nights (had 3-4 max hours of sleep). One of the nights I couldn't sleep even for a little bit. So I went to see the doctor. I had been feeling hungrier than usual as well. So the doctor asked me to have a FGT test (in a lab). I was fasting for 12 hours (no food no water). It came out to be 101.7 mg/dl (which translates to 5.65 mmol/L)

Can this be enough to jump to the conclusion that I am pre-diabetic?

No, that's quite normal, especially if you under physiological stress due to lack of sleep.

However, it would be a good idea to improve your diet and get some exercise.

Thanks NoCrbs4Me! I got worried because the range on the test result said normal ranges from 74-100. Plus, which I searched on internet, it said the normal range is 100. Anything above 100 is pre-diabetic. So, stress and lack of sleep before test would have caused that spike? Is it a good idea to get it re-checked? and yes, I am going to stay active now..

Yes, stress (chronic and acute) can raise blood glucose levels. Maybe get it re-checked after you've dealt with the stress and improved your lifestyle. Improving your diet is very important.

What does the term "pre-diabetic" actually mean? Having consistently higher than normal readings? Which never go down even with a healthy lifestyle? I am sorry but this is my first time dealing with such situation and different thoughts and questions come up to my mind..

I think it does mean higher than normal blood glucose levels, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. I don't think it means you can't lower your blood glucose through a change in lifestyle. Even many people with full blown type 2 diabetes can get their levels to normal.

However, one result barely into the pre-diabetic range is not something to worry that much about BUT, you should get your stress level down, start exercising a bit, and eat better, regardless of that one result.

Yes i will start working on my lifestyle but the thoughts worry me so much since I am dealing with anxiety as well..

Then it is best to see your doctor about your anxiety levels.

I already have..I was on medication 6 years ago then discontinued it. I have been feeling better and controlling it with meditation and deep breathing methods. Sometimes I have days where I feel anxious but I believe I can manage it myself rather than depending on medication. It's just that this result made me anxious since it's a little bit over the limit that was written on the result card..

Great to hear that you were able to come off the medication, I have used yoga breathing techniques to aid sleep and anxiety for many years.

As has been said, if you address your excercise levels and avoid the obvious dietary pitfalls such as fast foods, take aways, fizzy drinks, chocolate in excess etc then you will see a fall in those numbers that have caused this anxiety. Good luck.

Thanks! I really needed some counseling on this result that's all. Reading over the internet doesn't help too much as well since some sites say over 100 is pre-diabeties. Some say over 108 is pre. That got me so confused that's why I tried asking here.

So I should not be jumping to the conclusion that I am pre-diabetic but I should be talking care of my lifestyle and exercise. That's all? :)
