Newly diagnosed and beginning the juggling act.

Hi,
I was diagnosed yesterday, so still in shock and awaiting my diabetes team meeting tomorrow.

I'm a recovery driver for big yellow, and I guess this has been building up since last June at least. I had an accident at work then, ripped my rotator in a couple of places , which led me to working in the office for a few months. Very sedintary lifestyle, latte instead of a mug of tea, pastries instead of bacon and eggs, you get the idea.

In Oct I had my operation, was laid up at home till the new year before returning to light duties in the office. Around Christmas was when I really began to feel out of sorts, waking up in the night several times, running hot, and generally feeling drained. It peaked yesterday when I realised my vision was way out, so I went to the doctors. He tested me and I returned a reading of 27 so was sent packing to the hospital.

Now here we are.

I'm juggling because at 64 I still need to work, but I have to also manage...
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disoder (COPD)
Emphysema
Chronic Ideopathic Urticaria (CIU)​
and on top of that I am on the spectrum, I have Asperger's Syndrome.

Whilst all of that may help define me I try to no let it restrict me, which is where being Type 2 is different as it will restrict me.

So, I will be trawling the site looking for wisdom from others, from you, so thank you all for sharing your journeys here.

You have found a great place for motivation, support and potential friends. Everyone here has been where you are today. You can make changes that will help control your diabetes. I was in good health, with low cholesterol and good blood pressure but a change in job saw me sat behind a computer screen for way too many hours each day! I believe this led to my diabetes, no family history and although over weight I was fit and well.
After the shock of my diagnosis I found this site and the diet doctor website, what I read made sense so I started to follow the advice
I was diagnosed in October and had my first check up in February, I have gone from diabetic to pre diabetic, however my daily meter readings average 5.5 so I’m hopeful that my next blood test will deem me “normal”, I’m 3 stone lighter and overall adjusting quite well to this new future.

Wow, you've done well!

Like you, there is no history of it in my family so I was in shock. Looking around the site the thing that sticks out is the low carb diets. I'll talk to my team at the hospital tomorrow, and maybe get some shopping in.

Good luck tomorrow yes low carb seems to be a successful route for lots of people, it’s definately working for me. There are some sacrifices to make but when I considered the alternatives I was willing to give up the high carb foods. I can honestly say I feel so much better, I didn’t feel unwell before but can see and feel differences of low carb.

this is really a great forum, and most in here find very fast that they can in fact control and suppress this a nnoying disease /condition.... mostly by counting the grams of carbs one eat in a day in total and try to keep under 150 grams or even lower than 100 grams in total daily... it has helped me hugely to do exercise and muscle-building 2-3 times a week... welcome here

Thank you, I'm so glad I found this place. I did find the app first I think, but there is an enormous wealth of information here.

You will find many great people here who are handling their diabetes like real champs - you could even become one of them:) I would just like to add that this is for the long haul and it is quite a journey....not a sprint but a marathon....so don't give up, don't feel like you are failing at this if things don't immediately go as you may think they should....we all have good days, great days. bad days and dreadful days....just saying.....

There are many great success stories on lowcarbhighfat (LCHF) way of eating - and the definition of that will vary depending on who is posting....The key is for you to first, find out if you are or are not Type2, and regardless of what your final diagnosis is, get yourself a meter and test to see how different foods affect your blood sugars. Test before the first bite of a meal and then 2 hours after that meal to see how it goes.....you may have to tweak the meal with smaller portions or eliminate a carb altogether....what I am saying is that you have to find what works for you....no one, and I mean no one can nor has the right to say you must eat this and not that as your body will react how it will with certain foods....so, it will take a while, but you will get there!

Thank you. Now the shock has worn off I am beginning to see the work/commitment I need to put in. Long haul suits me as, being an Aspie, I am not good at sudden lifestyle changes. Getting food ideas together at the moment, and off to see my team this afternoon, so I will have a better perspective.

I am taking on board all the advice that's been offered, thank you.
 
Hi and welcome. Yes, cut the carbs right down. Have you been put on any meds yet? Are you overweight or quite slim; It can affect the true diagnosis and hence the best meds.

Hi, yes I have been put on Metformin (500mg x2) and Gliclazide (80mg x1). My best weight is around 182lb so I am overweight at 224lb. I've been stuck in the office for the last 8 months and put on 15lbs or so. A lot of work to shift that.

I've also looked up the adverse reactions between my diabetes tablets and thos I already take for COPD and allergies. Looks like the effects of Metformin can be reduced by my existing drugs.
