Just a word of warning to anyone flying with easyjet especially at Kraków. Going through check in our cabin bags were tagged. We thought it was another security thing. We were separated on the bus to the plane and I walked on when my wife came on she told me her bag had been taken from her almost forcibly and when she said I have breakables the Polish girl shook her head and that was that. When I spoke to one of the cabin staff she didn’t want to know and told me to see her senior at the plane door. That I did and she shouted to the baggage handlers to wait. I wasn’t allowed down the steps to where the bag was. Then I was!! But by then bag was in hold. Same Polish girl went to look but said all the bags would have to come off. I could tell them which one it was but oh no I wasn’t allowed. The senior said we should have been told why it was tagged and given opportunity to refuse or take stuff out. Rant over. Finally the reason I’m posting this here (about time I hear you say) is when we were sitting down my wife who is type 2 remembered her Blood Sugar Meter was in the bag. This is one we bought ourselves to keep an eye on her levels. These are delicate and can be affected by changes in pressure.
Luckily it seems to be working fine but it could have been ruined so please be careful.

Sounds like a nightmare, they should have explained the situation..
The only thing I can think of regarding actions with stowing your wife's bag in the hold, is that it may have exceeded the cabin hand luggage size? "Maximum size: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including handles and wheels."

Bag was correct size. You’re supposed to be asked/told why it’s being tagged - at no time were we asked/told anything. We have travelled quite a bit and we got caught which is why I thought this might be of benefit to others on the forum. Some of these monitors are expensive.

I worked at tarmac and checkin for a long time. The "rule" is this ... don't surrender cabin baggage

I'll bet it wasn't easyjet but rather an airport ground staff contractor exceeding their authority

On EasyJet if the cabin is getting full with OH bags they reserve the right to place baggage in the hold. BTW glucose meters are OK in the hold as they are just electronics which would be fine.

No !!! How would they know pieces and weights by pax and seat by DCS when not everyone has been checked in?

They don't. Read it again ... they took his (solitary) dimension conforming bag at checkin !!!! How does the airline know in advance the OH bin capacity/ies as he might have been among the first to front the counter.

I am a licenced jet and prop departure control specialist by the way. It's called "load and trim"

With a 25 minute turnaround which includes tidying up the after the previous flight, Easyjet cabin crew don't exactly have time for polite conversation. I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that they get the blame if a flight is delayed while sorting out one passenger's luggage problems. However, no excuse for discourteous handling of your predicament and the lack of explanation for their actions.

EasyJet are facing huge space issues with carryon bags, and are looking at various ways to reduce the number being brought on board. They now allow you to drop a bag that conforms to carry on size at the bag drop for £5 on many flights.

However, I doubt whether forcing passengers to hand over their bags without explanation is part of the “official” solution.

@Mike D I am assuming that the OP wasn’t referring to the check in desk, but to queuing at the Gate. Most easyJet passengers won’t go anywhere near the check in desk if they only have carryon size luggage, and will go straight through security to the Gate. It is normal practice for easyJet staff to ask passengers to volunteer to put their bags in the hold on flights that have very little checked baggage, and which they expect to have far more carry on baggage than they can possibly fit in the cabin. They usually start tagging bags in the queue, and when a certain number have boarded will start telling people they cannot take the bag onboard.

Sounds like a serious case of bad communication and poor service here.

Our meter’s instructions say to keep it out of the hold but as I said this was just a warning to those whose insulin etc could be separated from them without warning.

But why on earth run the risk of delaying a flight on what is a short turnaround to open cargo doors and again, who's doing the O/H bin counts? They have a serious issue or a bad policy in place

Once the overhead bins have filled up, I've seen bags are taken away from people at the bottom of the steps, at the cabin door and even removed from inside the cabin with passengers having already boarded. Nobody has to do any counting.
Never happened to me because I'm a smug git and I pay for speedy boarding so I get in first! But I've seen it happen to others on Squeezy Jet and also American Airlines (domestic flight, Pheonix to Albuquerque.)

I think it's a pretty common problem on short-haul/budget flights. Airlines try to maximise revenues by charging as much as possible for 'extras', like checked baggage. Passengers respond by ignoring the cabin baggage rules and trying to bring on oversized bags plus shopping, and the odd kitchen sink*. Which probably also slows down loading/unloading.

It happened to me a couple of times when I was commuting, and usually I'd get a sense of it coming when frowning staff prowled the boarding area looking at bags and for compliant people who may be persuaded to sacrifice their bags to the hold. Eventually I learned to get a bit stroppy and say 'nope', or ask them to sweeten the deal. Frustrating though when I was within regulations, and others obviously weren't. I keep my meter & bits in a ziplock bag and then my manbag and not had any problems.

*One bit of cabin luggage that stuck in my mind was a fuelled up chainsaw.. which started leaking petrol. I don't think the pilot was very happy having that onboard.
