Morning all. I have just taken my bs at 10.30am having not eaten yet and it has come in at 7.1 which seems high to me. Any thoughts?

Many thanks

One of the tests they do for T2 diabetes is to check whether your fasting blood glucose is over 7mmol/l
If it is, they usually call you in for a glucose tolerance test.
So you would be justified in going to your doc and saying that you had that result from a home test.

Trouble is...
- home meters are only accurate to with =/- 15%
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/blood-glucose-meters/blood-glucose-meter-accuracy.html
- some of us find that our fasting blood glucose rises until we have food, so testing at at any time in the morning is like pinning a tail on a moving target.

I would suggest testing your fasting blood glucose first thing and just before breakfast for a few days, and see what your normal pattern is.

If you find that you are one of the people whose blood glucose rises til you eat, then it doesn't automatically mean you are type 2, but it does mean that you can stop the rise by eating. Personally, I find that my rising FBG is halted by a cup of coffee with cream, or a brazil nut, or a slice of cheese. No need to have a Full English. :)

Hi @Linagirl
Your profile says you do not have diabetes. So, can I ask why you are monitoring your BG?
My understanding is without diabetes, your pancreas should be able to cope with the dawn phenomenon that @catinahat mentioned.
If this was a one-off reading, it may be caused by something on your fingers or a dodgy test strip.
If this is a common occurrence, it could be worth discussing with your doctor as it is a little high.

I am pre diabetic and have reactive hypoglycaemia my hb1ac has gone from 38 to 42 on the last test. I have a kit after suffering from gestational diabetes and so I feel I need to test to know what is happening in my body. I feel like I am having similar effects to last time when o was ill and started hypoglycaemic attacks

Hi @Linagirl , nice to hear from you, even though things aren't going too smoothly.
I would keep testing as you wake, then before you eat first meal.
Then you check how those readings are relevant to what you want from them.
If you need to, contact your doctor or specialist.
Have you upped your carbs lately?

Best wishes

Thank you I have probably increased without intending to over time. Testing my body without checking the numbers. I think you are right. X
