I have just visited my doctor at renal clinic. My hba1c is gone from 53 to 64 I have put on 1kl in weight.
What do I do I eat no fruit low carb bread. Very rarely have a full dinner except when I go out which is about once a week.I no longer drink fruit juice and low calorie hot chocolate drink sends me sky high.I don't want to give up on low carb what else might help me.I have just sent for two recipe books one vegetarian and the other meat meals.

Have a look on the Dietdoctor website for recipes while you wait for your books to arrive. Are the books geared toward lowering carbs?
Try creamed coffee to fill you and water for hydration which may also aid your renal problems. Do you enjoy cooking at home? If so there are loads of LCHF ideas on Youtube. Good luck.

It's annoying when your HbA1c does that, you're doing all the right things and . . . . . . . My HbA1c did exactly that in January last year. I have been lucky to have a FreeStyle Libre to help identify what exactly is going on. There were two things in my case. The dawn phenomena for a start and also extreme spikes when consuming small quantities of what I call "obvious carbs" like bread. I had previously kept to about 40 gms of carb per day but with a slice of toast on Saturday and Sunday, as a treat. The spike could be as high as 15 and then take several hours to return to normal.

I think the dawn phenomena is the worst to cater for, for example, last night I just had Mediterranean vegetables soup, normal BG until 04:00 this morning when it started to rise up to about 12 at 06:00. It's now nearly mid-day and it's still about 10 although I've only had one tea and one coffee.

What I have been doing more recently is VLCD similar to the Newcastle Diet, replacing the slimfast type drinks with Mediterranean vegetables, no meat, or fish. It has helped a lot although I struggle a bit after 2 months being good, especially when the weight loss plateaus. However, it does a remarkable job of lowering BG and flattening the peaks to the extent that I can tolerate a small piece of toast without much of a rise, also BG returns to normal much quicker. I'm just getting back into this VLCD so I'm hoping that my readings this morning will not be repeated for too long.

So don't give up on anything, but you might have to do some more fine tuning.

Would you like to share a typical day's food? That might help us to identify lower carb, lower calorie options for you.

@Motherhen2014 Do you self test BG before and after meals. Do you meticulously count the carbs you have each day. @Alexandra100 has a great idea.
Please hang in there. It's just a matter of identifying the problem and working on the solution.

Thank you I will look on Uribe.I put in no carbs recipe books so hope that's right.I thought I was doing so well too.
Will keep trying.xx

Well my diet varies take yesterday I had my nut bar for breakfast 5 carbs and 214 caps

Then felt sick after an our so had two slices of low carb bread with Aldi margarine 3 carbs each bread and butter I do caps night time with carbs and calories. Last evening I was out had potatoes chicken breast broccoli peas and carrots in a local cafe.Didnt eat anything for the rest of the day.
Today I am having after a 10.5 reading a chocolate flavoured nut bar now going to do a chicken curry with side salad and tonight will be toast with a little cheese toasted.

I thought the nut bars would be better for breakfast easy and simple but maybe not. They have fat 16gms saturates3.2 carbs 5.9 of which are sugars 4.8 fibre 8.5 protein 6.9 salt I.32

The bread is livlife 68 calories 2.4 fat 0.3 saturated 0.7 monounsaturated 1.3 polyunsaturated 3.8 carbs 0.8 sugars 2.1 fibre 6.7 protein and 0.22 salt.Sorry this is so long but just needed to put as much info as I can. I havev5.2 ounce chicken which will make a curry with onion celery mushrooms(which I only do two or three now) and herbs and a little coconut cream.
I just need to get it right.x

Hi. A low calorie chocolate drink could be heavily carb loaded. Forget calories exist and focus just on the carbs. Yes, veg, protein and fat are fine so hopefully moving towards those foods will help you

Crocodile I have a cales and carbs book that I go buy and get calories and carbs for everything but milk . I very rarely have over 800 calories and yet I put on two pound I cannot believe it I have had no fruit or sugar or fruit juice and only have a full meal if I go out.

This afternoon I tested before my meal of three low carb breads and 40 grams cheese toasted and it was 8.4, two hours after it was 10.

Can you ask, or do you regularly have, a full blood test including thyroid? I am thinking with weight gain on a very low calorie diet you may have a hormonal issue or water retention.

If you are committed to a low carb diet, why not try going very low indeed for a week or two and see if it makes any difference? It will in all probability have no harmful effects, but could help matters enormously, and so worth the gamble/hassle.

Two pounds isn't much. A litre of water weighs more than that. Look for the trend rather than the highs and lows.

I found that bread and anything made of grains with gluten in them was raising my blood glucose - just like yours rises.

Turns out it is a food intolerance and my blood glucose is much better without any gluten containing foods.

Look, why not give yourself a rest from this worriting and counting.

Just go to the simplest option for a few days.

Avoid the processed bars, bread and hot choc.
Instead, buy eggs or cold meat or cheese and have that for breakfast. A couple of slices of ham and cheese is just as easy as a nut bar!

Then for lunch and evening meals have meat and green veg. Add butter or cheese if you want more satisfaction.

Eat enough that you aren’t hungry.

The processed foods you have been eating would be causing me all sorts of blood glucose issues, cravings and water retention.

Have you been given a list of foods that are good for your kidneys? If not, then ask for one - the renal clinic should have them.
I had a test two years ago that came back with lowered figures for kidney health so of course I panicked and hit the net.
It’s usually recommended that preparing food at home, and choosing low-salt, low-phosphorus and low-potassium food is best so if you use a can of tuna, for instance, get one that’s in water, not brine.
A big bowl of salad takes a long time to eat and can be surprisingly filling. Fresh cauliflower, cabbage and peppers chopped small with tuna are good. Can you find low-salt cheese, unsalted nuts, eggs, fish?
If you avoid ready-prepared food then it’s usually easier to control what’s eaten.
Tested 3 months later my kidneys were deemed to be more than ok. I’m T1. Still not sure what had been going on there
Hope yours get good too, and your weight, and your bs - in fact everything!

What does your renal doctor suggest?

Good idea did that today hope I did it right. Had a chicken leg meat only for breakfast.

Lunch time a low carb chicken curry from internet with cabbage and Brussels very nice

Tea time a little roast pork and little crackling. Water for bed time.
Tested my BG 8.2 and 0.2 ketones don't know if that's good.
So ditches my nutbars and bread and potatoes. So thankful for all your patience with me but if I can keep it going hoping for some success.
