Type 2 Ketogenic Diet Question

Type of diabetes
Type 2
I’ve been trying to do some research on the ketogenic diet, and from my understanding the body uses ketones instead of glucose for energy. My question is, does the body still rely on insulin to transport ketones to the cells? Just confused how it works.

Simple answer is yes!
How much is dependent on insulin resistance.
Then it all depends on response to the glucose derived from what you eat.
If like me, my first insulin response is rubbish, so my spike is high when eating the food that creates the extra glucose, mainly carbs, sugars, starchy vegetables.
To avoid the spikes, avoiding those foods that spike you, the extra, excess insulin is not required. It will also improve your insulin resistance being as close to normal levels as long as possible.
Being in ketosis, will also give you better energy levels.

The answer is NO.
Ketone bodies are being formed from fat inside every cell containing mitochondria (most cells except red blood cells). This mechanism does NOT depend on insulin.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Having had a sneak at your profile I see you are on no meds and diet only, yet your status says you are Type 1. Is this correct?

No, it's not :) I have just created my profile today and had to pick either T1 or T2. I hope to change it in near future, sorry to confusu you. I'm diabetes free, so are people I work with (diabetics cured by diet adjustments).

Update: my status has been successfully changed.

There is no cure for Diabetes of any type. In my opinion, once diagnosed there is no such thing as being Diabetes free. There will always be a regime, be it dietary or medicinally or therapeutically one has to adhere to to stay well.

Welcome to the forum.

Thank you, Diakat. That is a fair rule which I am going to respect.

Dear Guzzler, it is possible to reset your insulin resistance for good. The process might be lengthy in more complex cases, but in general dietary adjustments, regulation of your circadian rythm and setting up other hormones suffice to regain insulin sensitivity. This is what I achieve with my experimental diabetic patients, without the use of medication.

A very contentious claim indeed..

Tried and tested, Bulkbiker :)
Having read your profile I see that you are on the excellent way to health yourself.

Then I will follow your posts with interest if not with a little cynicism.

For good? until your patients are dead I'm sorry but you are completely unable to make that claim.
I am a strong advocate for a ketogenic way of eating but there is no way I would ever make such a claim.
Edit to add unless they are all dead of course which wouldn't be a great ad for keto!

It would be prudent to make a stand alone thread outlining your theories rather than derail this one.

Not all keto diets are equal. You can either remain doubtful and cynical and diabetic forever, or try to keep an open mind and help yourself. That is entirely up to you :)

E="Doctor K, post: 1805430, member: 477150"]I might do that as well, thank you for suggestion, Guzzler.[/QUOTE

You're welcome. This also means that you will reach far more members than by inviting people to PM.
