Hey guys - wondered if anyone else can relate to this. I’m 26 and have had type 1 now for nearly 4 years. I have had this problem on and off ever since I’ve had diabetes (never at all before my diagnosis) but there is no pattern to it whatsoever. I just get these random episodes of feeling exerted and breathless for no reason. I’m ok when resting but sometimes can feel like I’ve ran a marathon just doing small tasks. Definitely worse in the heat too but I get this problem when I have good sugar control and also bad so I don’t think it’s directly related to my control and my hba1c is 6% so not really terrible. Wondered if anyone else can relate or have had similar symptoms related or non related to diabetes and if there was a solution?? Thanks!! X

I don't feel this is due to your diabetes. You need to seek medical advice if it continues.

Hi Dodo, I have been to my GP and endocrinologist countless times and had so much blood work etc and they can’t find anything which is frustrating because obviously it must be something!

Not wanting to add to your worries but have you been investigated for asthma or any heart problems?

Not asthma but I have had some heart tests done and have been told my heart is completely doing what it should be doing and I shouldn’t worry. Although easier said than done as I said, must be something!!

That's really good to know, so it's a bit of a mystery. The only other thing is whether you've recently started on new medication that doesn't agree with you, but I've never known diabetes to be a cause of shortness of breath.

I get this sometimes not sure if it coincides with being t1 but I think sometimes I forget to breath for a bit that's what it feels like anyways

Could it be changes in blood pressure? Do you stay hydrated?

Hi @briony1,
So you are getting check out by your doctor to rule out causes, That great ! Has he/she asked you whether there are any other symptoms like tingling of skin and whether there is anything you do which seems to settle your breathlessness more quickly?

My only experience of this is when I am running high. You can still have spikes with an HBa1c of 6.
But the fact it worsens with heat suggests asthma or an allergic reaction (e.g. hayfeveer type thing). Hope you get to the bottom of it especially in this weather. Sounds like hard work.

Not really! That’s the most annoying thing about it, is that there’s no pattern and no one thing that triggers or helps it! Getting so frustrated ☹️

Thanks Nicole, it really is hard work and it’s really getting to me now I just want to know what it is! I’m hoping something silly and simple rather than sinister but a diagnosis would just be appreciated at this point! Xx

Yep and they just sort of look at me as if to say “I don’t know what’s wrong” lol. I’m going back next week so will demand another test of some sort lol

If you get muscle aches at the same time it may be your blood is becoming acidotic and needing more oxygen. That's usually associated with high insulin resistance though.
