Diabetes: everything you need to know, including the signs, symptoms and treatments

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health...ng-need-know-including-causes-signs-symptoms/

Just come across this article on my Apple News news feed. Seemed sensible and well balanced until the last few paragraphs.

'Avoid fat, eat rice, fat makes you fat. Oh and look you can buy this home HbA1c test if you like'.

I understand that low carb is slowly starting to trickle through the NHS but this is daft. In years to come will people try to sue the papers, the documentary makers, even the NHS itself over the fact they've been advised to essentially kill themselves slowly? Where is the study to show potential savings to the NHS if they pushed diet over pills?

Bit of a rant I know but it just seems crazy!

Containing nuggets of wisdom like this ..

"It means that your insulin hormones become less effective at storing and dealing with elevated blood sugar levels."

Storing what? elevated blood sugar.. nonsensical rubbish

“Blood glucose levels change throughout the day,” explains Dr Woodhouse. “After eating, levels rise and then settle down after about an hour. They are at their lowest point before the first meal of the day, which is normally breakfast.”

she obviously has never seen Dawn phenomenon or tested very often...

" How can you prevent type 2 diabetes?
Keep your weight in a healthy range."

Come on you TOFI's you obviously aren't trying to gain weight enough..

And the killer...(literally?)

“Include a high fibre, complex carbohydrate food at each meal, such as grains or brown rice.

And consume less sugar. Too much sugar and foods containing sugar can cause the blood glucose levels to rise. It is best to replace these with lower sugar and sugar free foods instead."

Someone doesn't understand what happens to carbs when you eat them! Whoops!

Edit to add.. great to see she is a diabetes specialist too ....... NOT

I qualified from St Barts & The Royal London Medical school 2003. I have been a GP since 2008 and started at the Pinn in Feb 2011. I have a wide spread of experience however my main interest lies within respiratory medicine my bold...

Edit to add but it would appear she is the clinical lead for diabetes in the practise... bet they get great results!

I just tweeted her (without any fat shaming in case you were worried) to mention that as starchy carbs turn to sugar once ingested it may not be such great dietary advice for a Type 2.. Will let you know if I get a reply.

Obviously the 50% of obsolete/wrong stuff that she learned at uni must've included Diabetes :banghead:

It's about time the newspapers vetted the Dr's they allow to write articles for them. Instead of seeing GP or doctor and let them write any old rubbish.
Just tells you the intelligence of the editor. A degree in media studies and linked to whose who. Da dar! An editor is born.

Maybe diabetes.co.uk should start publishing a little newspaper/magazine to raise funds.?
At least it would be accurate and based on facts and proof instead of old mumbo jumbo!?

Brilliant.
Telegraph email addresses would normally just be [email protected].

Might try an email later when I've caught up with The Bridge - nightmare

What I think makes this much worse is that there are lots of we'll meaning people reading that article taking the advice to heart, maybe deciding today is the day I'm going to make a change and then cracking on eating brown rice sandwiches! How is that fair to release that information into the wild in such a throw away article? Then the GP's back it up, then the DN. You're hurting people!!!

Diabetes!
I thought the article was in the main quite well balanced and factual.

However, and as usual, just because there isn’t advocacy of LCHF the Dr is immediately branded an ‘idiot’! A little unfair perhaps.

As for ‘something to flog’ maybe I missed that one, but I couldn’t see what they are trying to sell???

According to her twitter bio she's an "eternal optimist", which might explain the kind of advice she gives. Anyway, I didn't see your tweet. Did you PM her?

"Keep your weight in a healthy range"? That means 20% of those with T2 couldn't possibly be T2. And it promotes the premise of BMI being a fairly accurate calculator, which, imo, it isn't. Switch from white carbs to brown carbs? This is missing a fundamental point. Like I said earlier, there's dumbing down....

I've still got to watch that, 4 brilliant series! :)
This last one has strained my brain more than usual. Forgot who some of the people were. Plus I'm so used to binge watching everything now, it's harder to follow weekly. Should really have waited until the end of the series and seen it all at once.
