So I was diagnosed just over 2 years ago in tally as type 2 then very quickly changed to type one as my GAD results came back high.

Over the last 2 and a bit years I’ve managed my diabetes just on metformin. And my avg hba1c was 5.5% I also lost about 5stone during this time. During the last 4 months I’ve kinda let it all go I’ve put on over a stone in weight and wasn’t really watching what I was eating nor doing my bloods.

Anyway last couple of weeks I’ve felt a bit tired and a bit hot (my face) after eating so I decided to do my bloods this morning and it read as 14.0 Whoch is obviously high then I had a bowel of shreddies something I could normally tolerate wel 2 hours later my blood is 22. So I am wondering if I should just eat less do a bit more excerise (from nine at the moment) and see how it goes or if I should take some insulin to bring my blood down it has been sitting in my fridge for the past 2 years not used and still in date can’t call my nurse and it’s Sunday so any comments welcome..

Sorry formatting and typing front phone.

People who try and make Diabetes the centre of the party and poor me, I'm special because I have diabetes now everyone run around after me.
You should see Dr ASAPperferably a specialist. I assume you mean 22mmol/l. That is an unacceptable reading. If you have not used insulin before, you need to do so under the direction of a qualified medical person. Insulin is a very dangerous hormone if not used correctly. I would go to an Emergency department at your closest hospital. If you are feeling really unwell call the non emergency ambulance phone number and ask for advice, they may want to arrange ambulance transport for you. Even if you were T2 at that level for any period of time and you will feel very sick. You need professional medical assistance NOW.

Hi,

Nobody can direct the use of insulin or any medication here.
If you are uncertain about the meds on your prescription. The only option you have if your bloods are high, is dial the NHS helpline on 111, a health professional will direct. Or order an ambulance for you, regarding what's appropriate for the nature of the emergency..

Best wishes.

I agree with the others, you can't just randomly start injecting insulin without medical advice. Dial 111 and get that advice. If you've finally got to the point where you need insulin then you do need help. Are you able to test your ketones? If they're high then you need to get an ambulance straight away, forget about dialling 111.

A t1 only managing on metformin scares me. And the numbers you’re seeing really suggest it’s not working.

One of the things we don’t know is what was eaten. And maybe if that was a fasting number. (If that was a fasting number- you should call your doctor right away).

Call your doctor. The sooner the better.

@cireland, did you call 111? Have you had medical help yet? Hope you’re ok.

So over 2 1/2 years as type 1 with NO insulin, just Metformin??? I really struggle with this diagnosis. As a type 1 you would definately need insulin!
Have you managed to speak to anyone about this since your post? How are your Ketones??

Porl69 - Rarely, indeed, very rarely we hear of those whose condition settles, and their honeymoon goes on for a long, long time. I'm thinking in particular of our member @Ian DP https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/members/ian-dp.91575/

Ian is now taking insulin, but went for a long time using oral medication.

I personally think there are a material number of misdiagnosis of diabetes types on a day-to-day basis. A fair few LADAs diagnosed as T2, and some diagnosed as T1 who transpire, once they wrangle their condition into place, actually be T2.

Whilst our medics don't test for type around diagnosis there will continue to be a curlture on diagnosis by best guess.

Ah ok. I was on the understanding that even in the honeymoon period you would still need insulin but not as much. Thank you for that info

Porl, I'm absolutely no expert, and open to challenge, but sometimes it seems, for the later onset folks, it seems to be a much, much slower burn. That can be coupled with a bit of insulin resistence, which could have applied to @cireland , then losing a chunk of weight could have improved that aspect.

As I say, all too often where folks are atypical, it becomes a diagnose of best guess. At least in cireland's case a GAD test was carried out.

Coming in a bit late, but as my name was mentioned, thought I would give my experience.

After being diagnosed T1, I went around 2 1/2 years without insulin or meds, just LCHF diet and exercise. I was given insulin pens etc around 18 months before I used it, with clear instructions about use storage and when to start from my consultant and nurse. I started on insulin when I was on holiday in Australia, as I could see my BG levels rising (probably because of the heat and lack of exercise). A few weeks after I returned from Oz, I stoped taking insulin for a few months before my BG started to rise again. My consultant had told me to start insulin earlier rather than later.... in that I should not let my BG levels raise to much... so when I struggled to keep them below 6.0 I started taking a few units.

I have now been on insulin for nearly 2 years, but only take around 12 units per day, I have been Ketogenic and on a LCHF diet for 5 years now but with a lot less exercise than I used to do. My weight hasn’t changed in 5 years and during this time my HBA1C has always been between 32 and 39.

The LCHF ketogenic diet has worked fantastical well for me and my BG levels. I am fitter and healthier now than I was 10 years before diagnosis.
