Hi, sorry to be a persistent poster.
I am worried that the doctor has misdiagnosed me as having diabetes. I would have agreed that I would have impaired glucose. However, I have been prescribed Metformin, although I haven't started them yet. I had a sandwich and crisps at 3 pm and have just tested my blood before I eat dinner and it is 4.4 is this normal? I know Metformin is slow acting but I am worried if this is going to get lower if I start Metformin.

How long was the gap between eating the sandwich and crisps and the test before dinner? Did you test 2 hours after your snack?

4.4 is not too low. You are very unlikely to hypo because of Metformin. It isn't that strong a drug.

I see from your other posts your diagnostic HbA1c was 6.8% which is the same as 59mmol/mol which puts you firmly in the T2 range. Also your fasting on diagnosis was 8.6mmol/l which is another indicator of T2.

What other levels do you see during the day (before and after meals)?

Should have said it 6 hour from lunch until dinner. I tested before dinner 4.4 and will test in 2 hours

After a gap of 6 hours, 4.4 before dinner is quite normal. I am always in the 4s before evening meal no matter what I ate for lunch. Please try and test before meals and 2 hours after first bite.

May I ask what exactly you mean when you say "impaired glucose"?

Plenty of non diabetics take metformin for other reasons (eg PCOS?).

If a non diabetic ate the same would they also have a high reading or would their reading be lower?

Depends on what you/they ate but they probably shouldn't go that high from such a good level pre prandial.
What was the meal?

This is just my personal opinion. A reading in the 4s is not low. Metformin is highly unlikely to make you hypo (it does not work on a meal by meal basis). Your A1c is not ambiguous, a result of 59 is well within range for the diagnosis of T2. And your reading in light of this evenings dinner clearly shows that you have a problem metabolising carbohydrates at that level.

I think it is time to consider a change of diet and to at least try to accept the diagnosis.
Again in my personal opinion, there is little to no difference between Pre Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes both signify a level of insulin resistance, only the levels differ.

Thank you. I have been tackling my diet, although you wouldn't think after tonight's dinner. I have a binge eating disorders which means I consume a huge amount of food, hence the reading tonight. I have been ok for a week but had a wobble. Tomorrow is another day.

Good luck for today. Keep testing, keep a food diary, and try to keep all the 2 hours post meal readings down to less than 2mmol/l more than your before meal level.

For many people who have/had disordered eating (me included) getting off the carb addiction treadmill led to far greater control over food. If you feel the need to binge try and stick to low carb food as much as possible.
