Sometimes I feel like I am going mad!.

I live with being Autistic, being diabetic, having fibromyalgia, having had two strokes and a host of other minor ailments and just think life would be so much easier if, instead of a job in a company with laudable aims but poor management and no sense of accomplishment/reward, I was actually doing something I looked forward to.

I am 52. Spent 23 years in the Civil Service and have now spent 6 years in my current post where there is no prospect of advancement or promotion and managers express their disappointment with me for feeling "under valued"!.

Its not about adaptations for being Autistic, they have been done. Its about doing something I want to do or gives me that sense of going home at days end thinking "Yeah, that was a good day".

Self-employment is suggested a lot. But I have no self-employment skills.

Would love to work in the travel industry but I am 52 (almost 53) and my wide experience of travel counts for nothing when put up against a graduate with a degree in tourism who has never been outside the UK!.

Sorry for the rant!.

Tour guiding in Dorset?
Although I have lived here since 1993 I know nothing about the county lol. My tastes are far more exotic.

I have always thought of it as a nice county. You have the Jurassic Coastline there, a world heritage site.

I recently went into Tui and asked about holidays in the Peloponnese. None of the 4 staff had heard of the place! So it seems the bar is not very high for getting a job.

I think their knowledge is very much limited to certain destinations and usually whatever the company decides is worth pushing at that time.
Mind you, on a commission rate of 0.5% per £1000 of holiday sold, perhaps their motivation or lack of means they don't do much research.

Oh I do sympathise! After 3 years of teaching, which I hated, I joined the Civil Service and managed 30 years before taking early retirement. It turned into an organisation that would never have been recognised when I first joined. I understand you completely.

Have you any hobbies? Could you turn one of those into a self employed job? There is a lot of help available for those wishing to start their own businesses. My son-in-law is 50 and has started his own self employment, so it is not impossible.

I have no hobbies whatsoever.

Cursed by Anhedonia- loss of pleasure in things..and nothing I can think of, that I can do, is transferrable to self-employment. Unlike my partner...who has a million hobbies and is elf-employed doing something else.

A self employed gardener/handyman ? I was self employed as a carer and I coped okay with the tax returns et cetera as I was the only one, biggest tax claim was for travelling by bus. Or have a look at your local college who might be able to help you find a course that could lead to a new career.
The unknown is the scariest, but once you get your head around the barrier's, it's not bad.

Did you get in touch with the people in the Autism Plus link I gave you the last time you posted that you are unhappy in your job? They specialise in helping autistic people with employment.

Sorry to hear you feel like that, but I do empathise - I work in education in a failing college. ''Tis soul destroying. A friend of mine became Ann independent travel agent, I guess though a franchise and does well.

I have fibromyalgia so anything physical is a no for me. Unfortunately we don't have a local college in this rural backwater but I will look online. Thanks
