Been a T1 for 49 years, been using a meter for 35 of those years. Although I've occasionally had errant reading on my meters, they've usually been because my fingers aren't sufficiently clean, so they over read, and a second or third test gives a lesser result. But recently I've been having issues with my caresens npop meter in that it under reads (a couple of 1s when an immediate remeasure gave 5, which isn't so bad since I knew that the 1 couldn't be accurate). But yesterday it read 3.5 when I really didn't feel hypo. Alarmed that my hypo awareness might be going I did two more tests, both 5.5.
So, my question is, how normal is it for meters to under read? What's the rationale behind a low reading? Faulty strips? Should I be asking for a new meter or testing twice per test? I base my insulin dose on my meter reading so if it's going to be out by 40% I need to retest. (10% isn't an issue).
Is this a problem to all caresens meters? (I hope not, as these are the only meters available in New Zealand, if I want something else I'll have to pay for it myself and order in, probably from overseas.)
