Hi
Is ice cream ok for us? I know it’s sugary but whenever I have it it doesn’t seem to spike it as horrendously as I think it should.

Would be amazing if it was ok.

Assuming the fat in the cream offsets the sugar a bit

Ice cream is a curious combo of fats, proteins and carbs that can cause some weird blood glucose readings later than we usually test.

As you know, it is the carbs that are important.

Just read the label.

There are several low carb icecreams out there, from Oppo to Perfect World, and others. It is fairly easy to get hold of them nowadays.

It’s just from little cafe hut in car park where I’m based today.
Didn’t have come I just had the scoops in a tub.

Last year I went on holiday to Italy, home of fabulous ice cream, and naturally had a few. My BS did not seem to be affected at the time, not too dissimilar from my usual readings. I also had some pasta meals, but not many.
However, my HbA1c a couple of months later was several points up. I'm not taking any chances, ice cream is off the menu! I find that a few berries and Yoghurt or Creme Fraiche is a good substitute. And far fewer carbs.

It depends on the ice cream. Some bought from ice cream vans, shops, and huts have barely seen a cow, others are rich in cream, all have sugar added. It depends entirely on how it is made and what with.

I generally treat myself to a tub when on holiday. I was away a couple of weeks ago and was wearing a Libre. I did spike quite high within the first hour to 90 minutes, then the spike disappeared and I was back to normal.

That's OK.
They probably have advertising on the side of the hut, or on boards.
If you know the brand, you can always do a google search and find the nutritional values that way. :)

Ice cream has a reputation of trolling diabetics into thinking they can eat it without deleterious effects. Very often a rude awakening isn’t far over the horizon. Approach with extreme caution.

That’s why I’m asking because I did eat and test and it didn’t do what i thought.

So you now know what that particular portion of that particular ice cream does to your blood sugar. Now you can decide if you want to eat it again.

If you make some real custard, with cream and eggs, warmed until it thickens, allow it to cool, whip it up, add flavour or frozen berries and then freeze you will find out what real ice cream tastes like.
My grandmother used to make it back when my father was a child, for sale at their shop - it was called 'Forget me not' and the local doctor advised it for children failing to thrive.

That sounds delicious.

I occasionally make my own keto ice cream, with sweetener and double cream and cocoa powder. It’s pretty good.

How high did it spike you?

About 15 mins short of the 2 hours it was 8.5 (this was lower than it had been so was still coming down)

4 hours later went to 5.0

Just now at 9.15 it was 5.7 having had ice cream at 11.30 ish

I don’t know what this means. Sorry

What do you mean? I thought we tested 2 hours after

The 2 hours is just a guide line. You will very rarely catch the peak at 2 hours. Your ice cream could have peaked at an hour, 90 minutes or anywhere in between. It may even not have reached its peak by 2 hours. When testing a food that is suspect, such as ice cream, it is a good idea to test at other times.

You say it was coming down - so what had it been?
