I took my blood reading this morning before breakfast and it was 9.5 - I took it again late afternoon and had some home made tomato soup some chicken an apple and two apricots and it rose to 12.9 and I’m exhausted- does anyone know why it rose so much

Probably because that was a large hit of carbs all in one go.

Are you able to fill in the details of what type of diabetes you have and what meds you’re on? It helps us all give advice.

I don't know what was in the soup of course, but 2 apricots and an apple is quite a lot of carbs. It's also possible there was still some residue from the fruits on your finger when testing.

Hi I didn’t have it all at one - I ate that over a 5 hour period

9.5 is high to start with and those foods are obviously no good for you.

I’m tagging @Rachox for the introduction information you will find immensely useful and welcome, you’re in the right place, we’ve got your back.

How much did it rise? It was 12.9 but what was it before you ate? Or was the 12.9 before you ate? It isn't clear from your post.

Are you testing in a structured way? To get the best out of your meter and to learn which foods are danger ones for you, you need to test immediately before you eat and again 2 hours after first bite. This will show you the amount of the rise at the 2 hour mark and should be under 2mmol/l and preferably a lot less.

No not structured at all as I only received the reader this morning so just gave it a go out of curiosity- but will take your advice from now on

Always a good idea to have a few practice runs!

In order to help you identify your danger foods it is a good idea to keep a food diary including portion sizes and record your readings alongside the food and drinks eaten. This will help you see patterns and help you adjust portion sizes or decide which foods to eliminate.

Looking back at the fruit you ate, it isn't surprising you had high levels after that. Fruit is full of sugar. If you want fruit, then a few berries are usually OK if eaten as part of a meal with double cream or full fat yogurt. Otherwise, they are best avoided.
