Hi
@IBEX82 I second what everyone else says about Jason Fung.
I was diagnosed November 2017 with an Hba1c of 122. Following the advice from this forum and a keto diet, I busted that number to 35 in 4 months. Job done!
Fate decided to stick it to me and gave me an autoimmune dose of Myasthenia Gravis. I am on a hefty dose of steroids for the next 18 months. I was left hanging by the medics for around 5 weeks with screamingly high BG levels. Eventually I saw a specialist nurse who put me on glicazide and humulin intermediate insulin. I also self fund a freestyle libre (Asda cheapest). The first thing I discovered was that thefreestyle showed that I was in hypo territory during the early hours of the morning. More stamping of feet until I was able to drop the gliczide and add in a rapid acting insulin as a top up during the day. I am still getting to grips with things but my highs are now around 10 rather than 21.
So, I am still pretty much keto. I am taking the insulin to try and counteract the scumbag steroids. I take the intermediate insulin just after the steroids as they both kick in at around the same time. The insulin seems to last around 3 hours. I watch the freestyle libre like a hawk and take the rapid insulin when the numbers start to rise. I keep checking the freestyle, sometimes I need two or three doses. Anything seems to affect things. The hot weather has definitely not been helping me.
So a word about weightloss. On keto, once you have got over the carb addiction weightloss is a byproduct and it just melts away. Unfortunately, you have chucked steroids into the mix. Traditionally, steroids will case an increase in weight. My neurologist told me that even doing a keto diet, I would increase my weight because they change your metabolism. So, I have put a bit of weight on and I may continue to do so, but it is going on slowly at the moment.
I am hoping that after I have been weaned of the steroids I will be able to ditch the insulin and the weight, fingers crossed.
I go back to the specialist diabetic nurse on 22nd July. If I have managed to keep my figures reasonable by then, I will ask her how I bolus for cake.
