My last metformin prescription came from a different supplier and l had horrible symptoms of nausea and diarrhoea. The chemist said there is no difference but l know this isn't true because l reverted back to almus that l found in my kit bag and the symptoms subsided. I work offshore and found it difficult to cope. Have anyone else had a problem?

I'm not on metformin, but I've been switched to other brands with different meds. "But it's the same, you can't have issues!" is what I usually get told too... But there are issues, and I feel 'em. Not just me either. Recently the producer of a thyroid med couldn't deliver for a long, long time because they were moving to a new plant... And thousands of Dutch hypothyroid people were switched to a generic brand which should've been the same. On paper, it was... But patients had palpitations, enlarged thyroids, fatigue and a myriad of other issues. Made the papers and everything. So it's not your imagination. This happens. In the Netherlands you can get your GP to sign off on a "medical necessity" for a certain brand, dunno if you can do the same.

Also, I had the symptoms you describe on Metformin, -they are common side effects, nausea and the runs- so I went looking for a non-medicinal alternative. I changed my diet, and I haven't looked back since. My HbA1c hovers between 33 and 35, so that's the normal range, no complications, no progression of the T2, and no medication for my bloodsugars nor cholesterol. (I'm assuming you're a T2, because not many T1's are put on met? It helps if you fill out your profile info, now I'm just guessing. ;) ). If you're interested, a relatively simple change in diet could help: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/, with more in-depth info in Dr. Jason Fung's the Diabetes Code, on www.dietdoctor.com and this forum's website, diabetes.co.uk (not .org!).

Good luck,
Jo
