Prediabetic??

Both my parents got type 2 so I have always been aware I might be vulnerable to diabetes. Within the last year I have noticed I am much more tired after meals. Recently I occasionally feel my mouth is dry and that's usually after meals. Also I have spells of going to the loo more often. I've had fasting tests done every couple of years. Last year they felt I was a little high at 5.6 but not drastic so it got left. I decided recently to try and find out what was going on throughout the day. I have an appointment with the doctor in a couple of days. I wondered what to make of the attached readings. I'm just trying to find out if I need to make lifestyle changes. I stated off doing a few days full on and then random testing

This site has more than forums. For example this page https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html giving guidance on appropriate levels.

Out of interest how long after meals are you testing? A few look a little high if in the 90-120 min range after so maybe some thought about the sugar/carbs you are eating wouldn’t be a bad move whilst waiting to see the dr for more detailed discussions and testing maybe.

I just checked my own BG as a type two in remission - after rather too many strawberries as they were going off.
It was 7.1. I usually aim for under 7.
Depending on just how much carbohydrate you eat, I might be rather concerned about some of those readings.
Sometimes I wonder if I had stuck to my conviction that I should eat low carb if I would ever have been diagnosed with diabetes at all.

Hi @Buzziewine ,

Welcome to the forum.

Nobody can diagnose you on the forum & it's great your are consulting your doctor.

As you mention the "random testing" that seems to be tailing off in frequency on your log sheet doesn't build up an accurate picture on BG trends.
Also the meter you are using could be reading as much as 15% higher? (That's just the tolerance level regarding how they "roll.")

Please let us know how you got on with your appointment. & more importantly the ensuing results regarding HbA1c from the lab...

Then folk here can offer a wealth of support & advice on what to action from there.

Had my GP appointment today and she seemed unconcerned by the readings. She offered me a fasting blood test at the hospital which I didn't see the point of as I have my own results for that. I did manage to get her to issue a request for an A1C in the end. I thought it would give me a proper answer as to whether I need to be concerned about reducing carbs and sugar etc. I really think preventative approaches are lacking at GP level. Hopefully I will fall into normal range at this stage but at least I will know if I am creeping towards diabetes or not.

Let us know how you get on. Well done for standing your ground and getting the hb1ac

I think the fact that you are worried at least shows you have enough awareness to do something preventatively for yourself even if not officially diagnosed.
If I were getting those post meal readings at home I would be reducing the quantity and frequency of the carbs in my meals till the 2h was back under 7.8 mmol, and preferably in the 5s or 6mmols. I believe those completely unaffected by glucose intolerance would be in the 4 mmols by the 2 hour post meal mark.
And you can probably assume you might have some level of insulin resistance (half of the country probably does) so pulling back on the carbs is wise even if you aren't diagnosed with prediabetes.

Well this is what I thought. I've had a couple of readings at 10 2 hours post meal. Lots of 8's and 9's since. I think she thinks if it's not all in double figures there's no concern. I'm someone who deals with everything I can myself rather than bother a doctor so certainly not looking for medication etc. Just trying to find out if I am headed the way of my parents. If so I may be able to do something about it.

Well this is interesting. Had dinner at 6pm last night. A stressful evening followed. My daughter rang with some bad news and a friend got in touch devastated her partner has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I had a terrible nights sleep and got up at 7.30 am to a 6.8 fasting rate. Stress obviously has an impact.

Just got the A1C results and they are within normal range. Thank goodness for now overall but I am mindful that some individual readings are still a little concerning given my family history. Also there is a definite correlation between me eating a carb heavy meal and borderline sugars. Probably sensible to think about making changes.

That’s great news. Just make sure you get the actual numbers note words. Not to worry you but I was told “normal” when in fact I was prediabetic (several fasting tests over years not hb1ac mind)
