Hi I am trying a low carb diet was wondering what is the right amount of carbs to eat during a day. I did recently fast for 18 hrs, but forgot to test after. Will be trying again. I have lost 1.5st over the last 2 months so hopefully I am doing something right. I have bought the Dr Fung The Diabetes Code makes interesting reading.

What is “right” seems to vary so you may have to play a bit. Anywhere from 20g to 100g seems common among T2s here.

Well as there are zero "essential" carbs then you can go as low as you want..

How many carbs you eat will depend on your aims and targets and most importantly how well your body can handle those carbs you might choose to eat. We're all different so it has to be your decision, but possibly try around 50g carbs a day as a starting point and see how it goes...

I work on the principle that my meter will guide me as to how many carbs I can eat and keep my glucose levels down to low pre-diabetic levels and be able to continue eating an enjoyable, varied, healthy & sustainable low carb diet long term. For me this is generally between 20-50g carbs a day, so no fixed amount.

Eating less than 130 grams of carbs per day has reversed my diabetic symptoms. My blood glucose levels are also in the “normal” range.

I agree with others. Also agree with with @bulkbiker in that there's no lower limit of safe carbohydrate consumption. You just have to find what works best for you and helps you to achieve your personal goals. Obviously be extremely vigilant if you are using insulin or oral hypoglycaemic medicines, but otherwise you're free to experiment without concern of causing any harm.

Congratulations on the weight loss. The Diabetes Code is an excellent book. It should be available on prescription :nurse:
