Hi, I'm new to this forum .

Im having gestational diabetes for the first time in my pregnancy at 31 week. And Im on testing 4 times a day my sugar levels for the last two weeks now . Diet really does the job for me , but only morning fasting readings is up and down for the last two weeks between lowest being 4.9 to highest 6.2 mmol/L .
My baby grows normally so far, but today seeing a diabeties nurse she has advise me (based on my morning fasting readings) to start taking Metformin one tablet in the evening with my dinner .
I really would like to wait for my next 32 week scan and see if baby at risk growing big . What should I do ? Should I start on Metformin immediately ?

I had gestational diabetes twice, one I diet controlled and one I ended up needing insulin towards the end. I think things can change quite quickly in pregnancy anyways so I felt happy going with the advice of the diabetes midwives and diabetes consultants. Growth scans are a good way of them predicting babies size (mine where always less than the scan said) I think they like to keep numbers lower now. Good luck and maybe call the midwife and chat over any concerns you have about the metformin. You can plan with your team what you feel comfortable doing and when.

Chat to the specialist nurse about whether your insulin resistance is likely to get worse for the remainder of your pregnancy and the risks that might be associated with that e.g. birthing a bigger than average baby!
Metformin has been around for a while so you should be able to establish that it is safe for you and baby. It works by stopping your liver making glucose (a little) and this could be relevant to your morning blood glucose levels. On the other hand it can lead to an upset tummy.
Make a list of the pros and cons anyway and I hope you have access to someone with diabetes expertise to answer questions but I think you've got a little time to make the decision.
