Hi all, I was diagnosed 6 days ago. I was hoping people might post what they typically eat and snack on in a day for inspiration.

I know about carbs such as; bread, potatoes, pasta etc but no idea about carbs in other foods.

Thank for in advance.

Welcome to the forums, T1 or T2?

Ok so you've listed what are probably the worst offenders but add rice to the list of bad boys.

Fruit contains fructose, a sugar. So look out for bananas, apples, pears and grapes etc. Berries aren't too bad and you may be able to get away with a small portion without it affecting your glucose levels too badly.

Many people here (especially T2's) are advocates of low carb keto diets. We actually have a sub forum so you can get some dietary and recipe ideas if you have a look around.

Hi and welcome. You have found the best place on the internet for help and support.

Do you know what your hba1c was? Are you on any medication. Do you want to lose weight?

Tell us what you eat in a typical day, we can tweak things for you.

We usually point people to dietdoctor.com for meal suggestions. There is also a thread in the low carb forum called something like - what have you eaten today. Do you have some favourite foods?

Thank you all. No readings as yet as I can't see a nurse due to covid.

I've ordered some books for ideas and will start testing my bloods from tomorrow.

I've been eating, bran cereal or wholemeal toast with wholebut peanut butter for breakfast. I have been eating berries, melon and oranges but also bananas and apples so I'll reduce those now thanks or the heads up. Meals are mainly meat or fish with veg or salad. Snacks, nuts and snack a Jack's. Also been eating fat free Greek yoghurt honey flavour?

Can I drink flavoured water?

Also how do I get the app to show me notifications? I didn't know you guys had replied until I went in to check.

This whole thing is blowing my mind. I need to lose weight and need to have a liver check now too.

Watch the thread, top of the page.

No cereal or toast of any colour. Check the label of the peanut butter, if it has added sugar, put it in the bin.

Berries OK, the rest of the frruit needs to go. No fruit juice either.

Don't know what snack a jacks is, check the label.

If you go low carb (I went keto stricter than low carb) it will sort out fatty liver. You must have had an hba1c to have been diagnosed.

No rush, tim e to get your head around things.

I don't drink flavoured water, some people willl have water with a squeeze of lemon. For low sugar squash, again check the label.

Cereal! There's another one for the list. They are usually pretty high in carb content for their weight. Once you get a glucose meter you'll be able to judge the effect the foods have on you.

Honey is basically a form of sugar so check the nutrition label on the side of the yoghurt carton.

As a guide, a teaspoon of granulated sugar is approx 4 grams. So you can judge what the sugar content is some of your foods.

Some foods will surprise you, mango chutney for example is around 60% sugar. That was a bit of shock for me when I started out.

Hello and welcome,

You've been given a great link of @JoKalsbeek it is definitely worth a read.

Some suggestions for food are things link bacon and eggs for breakfast- no toast but you could add a few mushrooms or some spinach leaves. You can have a salad with some protein (fish, chicken etc) as long as you are careful with the dressings.

I personally found it easier to go very low carb/keto as that means I eat things with very low or no carbs and don't really have to bother with weighing my food.

You don't need to worry about calories so much.

Anyway- it is covered in the link so read it and read around- it iOS. great site with lots of resources and support and advice e.

Welcome.

Good morning, and a welcome from me too. You've already been given the Nutritional Thingy's link, so I'll not go there again. Just have to mention that Snack a Jacks are high in carbs too, so yeah.... I know, just about everything you've always been told is good for you, turns out to be absolutely horrid for a diabetic. Who would have thought it eh? When you check a label, check total carbs, not just "of which sugars", as all carbs turn to glucose once ingested. Go through your cupboard and check the "healthy" stuff, and be amazed... On just how unsuitable it is. (And since fruit doesn't come with a label, more often than not: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/fruits ). So while you're busy processing the concept of having a metabolic condition, you also have to re-learn food, which is a big change and you don't have to get right overnight, okay? Just read, learn, and go over your usual groceries, see if there's still that's got less carbs in to replace the usual fare, or if there's stuff that was fantastic all along and you thought you couldn't have.

Forget fat free, as fats are actually good for us diabetics. It slows down the spike of any carbs we do eat, fills us up, contains vitamins and minerals, and does NOT spike blood sugar at all. So it's the full fat greek yoghurt, and really, full fat anything, you want to go for. Take it from someone who's been eating bacon once or twice a day for almost 4 years now, lost weight, lowered cholesterol, and got rid of her non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (that usually comes with diabetes, so don't worry if your liver turns out to have issues, this diet will fix that too. It's all connected.) and morbid obesity. That said, you don't have to take the word of some random internet person for anything. Get yourself a meter, it'll tell you exactly what is going on in your body and whether certain foods agree with you or not, without trying to sell you on any dogma.

It's a steep learning curve when you've just had a shock diagnosis, so give yourself some time to sort things out eh. And do get the Dr. Jason Fung book, The Diabetes Code. That thing's a lifesaver.

Good luck,
Jo

Thanks everyone did my bloods today for the first time 5.6 before breakfast and the same 2 hours later. Had wholemeal toast with peanut butter as that's what I had in. My big shop is being delivered today. Are those readings OK?
