Having still not seen or heard from anyone two months after being in hospital, I’ve decided to pay to go privately. However where do I find an expert; a true expert endo that actually specialises in diabetes, is forward thinking, up to date, interested and will not just spout the same old Eatwell Guide at me? I need someone in the south of England but I want to avoid Manchester or London at the moment. Any recommendations please?

There should be a diabetes specialist unit that type 1's are referred to near you. These consultants usually see private patients.
You may want to check to see if you qualify for the referral pathway? https://www.england.nhs.uk/rightcar...40/2018/07/nhs-rightcare-pathway-diabetes.pdf
I see on a previous post you had a c-peptide blood test 0.17-0.9 nmol/L (SI units) already at 3.9 nmol/L which supports type 2 as it's above the normal reference range. It's usually fasting 8 to 12 hours before the test rather than low carb. Something worth asking about, especially if you didn't fast.

added: urinary C-peptide creatinine ratio (UCPCR) test two hours after a meal > 0.6 nmol/mmol supports type 2 (but still could be type 1 in honeymoon period)

Thank you ert I have asked about my c-peptide in here but could t get clarification. It was a urine test to be done after a meal. I’m not sure why it wasn’t a blood test.

There are plenty of private specialists near me, I was just hoping to get a recommendation for someone amazing as I can’t afford to waste money on seeing the wrong person.

I can recommend someone in Oxford, but I'm not sure if it follows the forum's rules.

Hi Flora, I have private healthcare insurance (it doesn't cover diabetes and I know you are looking to pay yourself anyway), but in my experience the Consultants are the same people who work in & for the NHS or have done. I found that what you get is quicker appointments/better one to one care and a wider variety of testing if appropriate. That's beneficial but I have found that they still 'spout' the same old advice as the NHS in most matters. I am sure there are forward thinking ones but as ert says, a recommendation is probably better than picking one out of a list. x

Are you looking for someone to do tests or someone to speak to about results.
Was thinking that maybe remote consultations might be a possibility ? Just a thought depends on what you want the specialist to do.

Edit to add.. are any of these guys near to you?

Both I guess. I had many tests in hospital but they found nothing. Not had a c-peptide blood test ever, only urine. There is just something not right. My BG went really high two months ago, pretty much overnight. I’m now temporarily on metformin but I’m still around 10 mostly. I’m currently 8.9 and that fasted for 22 hours!! I just want to speak to be under the care of someone who knows their stuff and is up to date. My GP doesn’t seem to care which I find frustrating. Thanks

Edited to add that yes a few are within travelling distance. I don’t really understand what the organisation is. I already follow Keto and it worked really well until a few months ago. Sorry if I’m being dim.

THE PHC is the organisation that has low carb/keto conference every year in the UK and has published a list of low carb friendly doctors which I linked to.
https://phcuk.org is the main site.

Whether they will fit your brief I'm not sure but they'll be way more open to looking at what you want than many others I'd hazard a guess. Might be worth contacting the nearest and seeing of they do private work as if they can't fit the bill than maybe they could point you at a specialist who would?

I understand now. Thank you. I’ll give them a call.
