Eating Minimal Carbs, but blood sugar still high

Hi there,

I am new to the forum, so I was coming on to look for advice.

For the last ten weeks, I have reduced my carb intake to under 20g per day. I also only eat between 2PM and 10PM each day and I’ve lost around 23 pounds.

The thing is, I cannot control my blood sugars. I have been an insulin-dependent type 2 diabetic for 30 years. No matter wether I take 80mmol of Tujeo at night, or don't take any insulin at all at night, my readings are still around 10 in the morning, so it doesn’t make any sense.

I have had diarrhoea for the last few days and been nauseous, so I have curbed my eating and only been eating around 6g of carbs per day, but it has been a lot worse. For example. it got to 9.2 and I took 10mmol of Novorapid, as I noticed smaller doses weren’t moving it. I checked the reading an hour later and it had only dropped 0.8 to 8.4. I have also been taking 2000mg of Metformin each day.

Has anyone experienced similar and if so, what would they suggest I do.

Thank you in advance.

@wokster Have you just started the Metformin or are you used to it long term?

Novorapid often takes more than an hour to show effect.

Can you give us an example of what you usually eat? Perhaps we can find some hidden carbs.

Toujeo works longer than 24 hours so it might take longer than a day to see effect.

I hope you can get to the bottom of this, sounds pretty frustrating!

I’ve just checked again and I’m still only at 7.9.

Typically in a day, I eat scrambled eggs to break my fast with coffee mixed with a protein powder (2.3g of carbs). for my evening meal, I ususlly have meat of some sort (pork, steak, lamb or chicken) or fish, along with broccoli or cauliflower. I never snack.

I haven't experienced similar (T1 here) but I would remind you that illness can push up insulin needs dramatically. Frankly, with those symptoms and the weight loss, I'd contact my medical professional. Unfortunately non diabetic medical issues can feed into the diabetes and push your levels out of control. Good luck.

Edited to add. Unless the weight loss was intentional???

Hello and welcome,

that sounds really really frustrating. I hope you can get to the bottom of it. Havre you had the necessary tests to see if you are still producing any insulin- absolutely not my area of expertise at all. You have had some advice above in relation to the mediation- I hope some of that has helped.

Hugs
