Confused over my readings

Hi
I was diagnosed 3 months ago over the phone. It was a bit overwhelming.
I was put on 500mg of metformin that I take every morning. I've been testing for the last month as I get lots of symptoms still.
My fasting BG is never below 14..usually around 16.5
I watch my carbs and only have 1 meal that has obvious carbs like bread or potatoes. I don't eat pasta or rice.
2 hours after eating my BG can be anywhere from 18 to 23. It was once 29. 1
I tested for 3 nights at 2am to see if I had the dawn phenomenon
The results were 16.6 16.1 and 16.1
I have cut out sugars and have meat fish and veg for my other two meals but my results remain no lower than 14 before a meal in the evening and always around 16 fasting.
What am I doing wrong ?

If you are really controlling your intake of carbs, then you might be one of the more interesting types of diabetic - boring ones like me cut out carbs - though it might be necessary to get down to 50 gm a day at the most, but then we see under 10, or under 8 even.
I think you might need to go back to your GP with those results and suggest that there is something going on which ought to be investigated fairly quickly.

Thankyou. I'm finding it all very hard. I thought type 1 only had to carb count and type 2 eat a healthy diet. I follow the slimming world way but I still don't get good BG readings. Some days my eyes are so blurry..which I've since found out its diabetes related and not my age.
I will call my GP. I have my next blood test tomorrow so maybe that will explain things. X

Any idea what your daily carb intake is?
Your high numbers indeed imply you aren't a classic T2 but it could also be that you are still eating more carbs than your body can currently cope with.
I'd get back to the docs asap and ask for some testing to see how much insulin your body is actually producing.
Do you know what your HbA1c was when you were diagnosed and does your doctor know what blood sugar readings you are getting? They should be concerned.

Hi thankyou for talking to me. I feel really shakey and yuk today.
I wasn't told my first blood test result just that I had diabetes and I had to eat healthy and protect my feet .
I had a general check up blood test and then the test for diabetes.
I've not heard from the diabetic nurse since. She just recommended this website.
I don't really know about counting carbs so I probably did the wrong thing and tested my meals to see what makes me worse. I had toast and that sent it over 20 and potatoes send it really high as does baked beans which I love..bananas send it high even blueberries ..if I eat just eggs and green veg and fish I can get down to about 14. Weetabix sends them high too after 2 hours. I'm just finding it hard knowing what to eat that doesn't spike me a lot.
I like eggs but not every day. If I have none of the usual carbs like bread potatoes root veg then I'm very very hungry.
Just done my BG 3 hours after eating beans and cheese and its 20.0. I don't want to eat lunch now incase it makes it worse x

Any meat, fish, eggs, green veg should be fine.
Fats will fill you up and keep you satiated to avoid the hungry feeling. Maybe add some melted butter to your green veg to help.
Any carbs (especially if you are seeing high figures as you are) will be bad.
Most of what you are eating is unfortunately not all that good.
That you can get lower figures by cutting out all carbs indicates that dietary control might work.

Thankyou so much for your time. It seems the slimming world diet isn't that great for me as fats are a no and it seems sometimes a bit too much carb allowance.
I will look up some good recipes and go from there. Thanks again x

If you are interested in low carb eating there are lot of free recipes and guides on the www.dietdoctor.com website.

I would echo the advise to get a c-peptide to see how much insulin you are still producing. If it reads high you can be certain you are type 2, if not you could be type 1 or a variant. If your not type 2 diet changes won’t help much.

They won’t do the test at tomorrow’s appointment but you can get them to order it for sometime in the future. With constant figures in the 10’s/20’s your GP should be testing for ketones as a priority.

Thankyou for answering. I called today but the diabetes nurse wasn't in. My friend told me I should test for ketones I may buy some test strips. X

Forget all you, and Slimming world and weight watchers has ever taught you.
It is healthy fats that will keep you feeling full and not hungry.
In my early days of low carbing when I got the urge to snack I would eat a spoonful or 2 of neat double cream or full fat yogurt or a small portion of whole nuts would stop the craving.
Adding cheese to meals meant they filled me up and eventually I got to the stage where I rarely need to snack. I've lost over 3 St, never felt hungry and didn't increase my exercise.
I know it sounds weird compared to the low fat diets, but for us diabetics, it certainly seems to work
Trying going very low carb, increase your healthy fats and those bg numbers should come down
