Hi everyone,

I am new to here and I am a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes on Nov 2020. My HbA1c was 5.8 but my OGTT test was 4.5 at fasting after 2 hours 12.4 therefore they said I am diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and put me on 1 tablet of metformin a day.

Since Nov 2020 I have lost 15 KG already which I currently weight 93 KG and I am 28 years old. Until now I am still very depress and I went crazy on pricking my fingers everyday :arghh:.

Mostly my fasting blood sugar stays around 4.4-4.9 and after meal (2 hours) my blood sugar is usually 6.5 - 8.3 therefore I am just wondering if I am on the right track and should I still be worry about it because it stresses me out since Nov 2020.

Also, I have noticed that sometimes my blood sugar will rises 3 hours after meal (lets say my 2 hours after meal blood sugar was 7.3 and then it will goes up to 7.8) I wonder if that is normal too? But eventually around 5 hours after meal my blood sugar will be
5-5.3.

Thank you so much for reading it and I hope everyone is healthy!

Hi & welcome to the forum.

To be honest it sounds as though you are doing very well right out the gate. Your fasting numbers are good and post meal numbers aren’t rising too high especially if they come down again after your food is fully digested.

If your meal is high in fat it can take longer to peak so I do not think it’s unusual. I’m sorry to hear you are depressed & stressed but you really are doing the right thing by testing frequently.

There are lots of experienced type 2’s on here that have great control with diet, exercise & metformin. Read some of their experiences & take motivation in that your doing the right things.

Hi Tash,

Thank you for your reply. Can I ask when do I need to be worry if my blood sugar rises too high? Like what is consider too high? And do you mean it will still peak after 2 hours of time when my food is not fully digested yet? (Maybe I should stop googling because it always stresses me out when they said blood sugar will be back to fasting level after 3 hours).

Those numbers are pretty good: don't get too down about it- if you take care of your diet you'll prolly be fine

Googling will probably throw up a lot of conflicting information. There is a good learning centre on diabetes uk which will explain things a lot clearer.

Ideally when you eat your looking for no more than a rise of 2mmol 2hrs later but if there’s a lot of fat in a meal it takes longer to digest so you could keep rising after that 2hr point. But a lot of people feel that as long as your fasting levels are back down to 5-7mmol before your next meal it’s ok.

Diabetes has so many variables & everyone is different. There will be times when you go high but it’s about limiting those times and keeping good overall control. Don’t beat yourself up over the odd high reading & celebrate how well you are succeeding.

Are you keeping a food log? Those 8’s might be caused by a meal with a higher carb content. If you record everything you can see patterns and tweak your diet. This might mean you have less stress but counting carbs & changing diets can also add extra chores to your day.

If your seeing figures in the tens / teens this is too high & you should contact your diabetes team. How are they? Do they check in frequently? Do you have their number or email?

Hi Tash, thank you for your reply again.

My levels are always back to 5 before my next meal.
And yes I am keeping food log but I usually just eat the same stuff since I am asian I always have red rice (lower GI) usually my sugar will read 7.6 and I will have pasta too (because it doesn't really raise my blood sugar) just like I had lasagne just now and my blood sugar is 5.9 after two hours.

To be honest my blood sugar never reaches 10 since I am diagnosed. I do see my specialist 3 months a time but he said he is not worry about me because he said my diabetes is a very mild and early - but I just always doubt myself when I see those numbers and it really stresses me a lot because I am worry it will get worse.

Your doing great. Your diagnosis has been a kick in the pants to make some positive changes, keep using it that way and stick around the forum.

Hopefully that will help relieve some of your stress. Some times we just need to know that we are doing the right thing. Your team sound supportive & your in a good place.

Lots of people would kill to have no rise from pasta so your winning there too!

Welcome to the forum. I'm type 1 so a bit different. The two hour after meal testing is to check that you are not spiking your BG which you don't seem to be. The two hour is the average time but everybody is different and also depends on type of food you eat.

Try not to worry. Your figures all look good to me and glad you have accepted the problem and decided to sort it.

Good checking and you know where you can get help if you need it.

I became diabetic at age of 5
