High Blood Sugar - Waiting for Blood Tests

Hello everyone - my first post here (70 yr male). I appreciate some advise.

Over the last few weeks I have lost about 6 kgs (down to 72 kgs) had cold feet at night and experienced thirst during the day. These symptoms seemed to begin around the same time i had my first COVID vaccine jab - not sure if there is any possible correlation.

Over the weekend I touch a bg test and was horrified that the result was 22 mmol/l. I don't feel particulary ill (concerned about the rapid weight loss), but since it was so high, I went to a walk-in clinic and saw a GP. They prescribed 40mg gliclazide once per day and advised further tests with my doctor. I took the first dose yesterday and with a very low carb diet, my bg was 9 by mid afternoon (i felt good about this). However, in the evening with a low carb dinner, it rose to 13 two hours later (i did have a glass of semi skimmed milk - maybe this was a bad idea) and 15 this morning.

I'm trying to get a GP appointment and blood tests, but cant get an appointment yet. I'm monitoring my blood 4-5 times a day. While waiting for the GP appointment, would it be advisable to take another dose of gliclazide (or half 20mg) with my evening meal to try to prevent the elevation in the evening. I'd certainly sleep better going to bed with a bg level under 10.

Any advise based upon experience appreciated.

I know we can't give medical advice but I am surprised the GP put you straight on gliclazide. Usual NHS advice is metformin and diet?
If you've only recently developed T2 then research shows you can get a very good result from going low carb but it isn't immediate. And the early morning BS is usually the last to drop into the normal range.
What are you eating?

Do note that rapid unexplained weight loss can be a signifier for Type 1, so make sure you mention this to the docs, they may chuck in some extra tests.

breakfast omlette (2 eggs, cheese, ham), lunch and dinner with chicken / lamb and some vegetables. I'm drinking tea without sugar / sweetner and water. Last night i had a glass of skimmed milk - not sure whether lactose could have increased the bg as i'm eatign very low carb. I have in indoor bike so trying to do 15 mins twice a day an hour or so after eating. I'm going to eat nuts through the day and also read that vinegar on salad can reduce sugar spike. I guess everyone needs to learn what works for them.

I'm going to try to avoid strong meds if possible - i can exercise and can control my diet. I think since it was the weekend, they reacted and wanted to try to get the number down. I want to get get urine / bloods done asap as it very concerning that things changes so dramatically. On my last 6 month checks I was around 7 mmols/litre and have been around that for many years

Thanks for the advice. I thought that, but the gliclazide seemed to induce insulin production as my bg levels from 17 to around 9 after about 6 hours.

T1's dont tend to lose their entire insulin production in one step :) For some it can be a short amount of time, but for some it can last years until it finally completely disappears
