I’m looking to get laser hair removal done at a clinic. I wondered if there are any other diabetics out there who have had laser and what was your experience? My leaflet says it may not be suited to someone with uncontrolled diabetes.

On the whole my control is generally good! Of course could be better but I’m not sure what constitutes as “uncontrolled diabetes”

Any help or experience in this area would be welcome!

It's because diabetics can feel more pain with laser hair removal due to sensitive nerves and tissues and are usually more susceptible to infections due to the slower healing response. I've had it without any issues. My blood sugar control is also good.

I've never heard that. Can you explain a bit more about it?

I'd have thought the issue was your second point; high blood glucose impairs healing, slow healing increases the risk of infection, infection leads to even higher bg and so on.

I guess you mean this part from the link: "When it comes to hair removal for diabetics, things get slightly more complicated. This is mainly because diabetics have more sensitive skin and are usually prone to injury and infection."

We are more prone to injury? Really?
If diabetics feel more pain than the general population, I'd think there would be studies on it, as it doesn't make sense. Yes, nerve pain is a thing with diabetics who have also been diagnosed with neuropathy but I've never heard diabetes in general gives you sensitive nerves or skin.
I don't think this website was written by a doctor specialised in diabetes, or even a doctor at all. I wouldn't use it as a source to base my decisions on.

It's because high blood sugar levels can also lead to inflammation. Over time, this can dull or overstimulates the immune response. The nerve and blood vessel damage can also reduce circulation. Poor blood flow can alter the skin’s structure, especially in collagen. Without healthy collagen networks, the skin can become stiff and, in some cases, brittle. Collagen is also necessary for proper wound healing. I would have to find medical references for you. I walked 20 km today in the Coastal Path and am too beat tonight.

Wow, that's a serious walk, please enjoy a well deserved rest!

Don't worry about the links, it's clear now what you meant. I mainly reacted because I thought it was rather strange to not do something because "diabetics can feel more pain with laser hair removal due to sensitive nerves and tissues". I mean, if your skin is painful or sensitive, you'd know, you don't need diabetes for that.

When I wanted to do laser hair removal, I was told that with diabetes it is contraindicated, because laser is bad for blood vessels and diabetes also gives complications to the vessels. Are your wounds healing normally? I once used a depilation cream and that my woundI had irritation on the leg area and I did not continue, and then I combed this irritation and a wound formed) did not heal for more than a year :arghh:

I've got diabetes too and did laser. As long as your control is generally good, you should be fine. I checked with my doctor, and they gave me the green light.
