Hi, I haven’t used this site before, but thought it couldn’t hurt. I am a type 2. I am taking slow release metformin since January this year. I had covid over Christmas and was hospitalised. I have lost a huge amount of hair due to the long covid I now have. I’ve recently started noticing a strong smell of what reminds me of pickled onions when I sweat, which is often. Does anyone know what this is? With the hair loss and now this I stay home all of the time. Thank you.

Did you loose your sense of smell with covid? I have seen reports where people who did, when it came back it was altered and what used to smell pleasant smelt horrid, and vise-versa

I think it would be helpful to see your GP, in person not a telephone call so they can check this. There are a few things that may cause this. Or it may be your brain is confused after a period of losing smell?

I lost my sense of smell a few years ago after a bad cold and it took ages to come back and is not as good as before - which makes cooking for others tough. Then a drug I was prescribed for migraines caused synaesthesia. I now suddenly smell, more strongly than actual things, a word I read or hear or even just see in a picture occasionally. EG I read the word rose (with no description about it) and then I smell roses very strongly. I am lucky that these are mostly pleasant scents but some days I have to avoid any mention of certain words that are triggering an unpleasant smell.

Isn't there someone who could sniff you to determine if the problem is with your body or your sense of smell?

I would second this first.. might sound odd but..

I go through period where I can swear I smell like diesel.. so bad I feel my head is spinning.. hands/arms/armpits even breath

I can even have a shower and immediately feel that I can smell it

I’ve had someone else smell me when my head was spinning from the smell and they swear they can smell nothing

I suffer from reduced sense of smell from a medical condition.. I assume my sense is confused or im imagining the smell..

Now on the other hand if the day you stink… then see your gp

Yeah I suffer from ‘phantom smells’ now and then if I have a bit of a sinus infection. Diesel is one of them, like a bus or taxi running in the room. The other I can’t describe, just no terms of reference.
