I had my retinopathy screening at the hospital yesterday. In case people wonder, it takes only a few minutes. The drops the doctor/nurse puts in your eyes sting a bit, but it's not actually painful, and nothing to worry about. I was worried before the scan that I might blink with the drops in my eye - until the doctor told me that I had to blink to get the drops circulating. Then you have to wait 15 minutes while the drops work, and then some photographs are taken of your retina.

I walked home from the hospital (about 20 minutes from my home), and people were asking me if I was OK in the street. Not only is your vision blurry for a few hours, but as I walked home it was like water pouring down my face - it would have looked like I was crying, but it was just the fluid they put in my eye I think. So it was strange to feel like my eyes were streaming, for no reason...

Noting that I haven't had that side effect from the drops.

I like the fact that my lady (both times I have had this done) tells me it looks ok so I don’t have to wait for the letter fretting. X.

I've never had that happen to me either and I've had 5 retinopathy examinations now, so I expect we are all different :)

I have had at least 15 retinal scans. Never experienced running eyes. Just dilated pupils, sensitivity to light and blurred vision.
The worst was very blurry and last 4 hours.
The best was less than 30 minutes.
The only pain was a slight sting when the drops were applied.

Definitely never been anything to be afraid of. Just a mild inconvenience because I don't know whether to plan to be working in 30 minutes, 4 hours or later.
