Type 2 travelling to the EU

Has anyone had experience of travelling in the EU since Brexit? I normally manage the journey by taking sandwiches, cheese and snacks. As far as I can find out the only items accepted are bread , honey and bananas. Not ideal for a low carb diet! Any suggestions welcome.

How long are you expecting to be travelling for?
Most journeys to Europe will only take a few hours at most.
Why do you need to take food with you?

...You do know we have food on this side of the pond. ;) Wheels and wheels of Gouda cheeses! Or brie, if you prefer the frogs' fare.

Are you flying in? Because you're over here in no time at all, and most airports have a supermarket where you can stock right back up. Same goes for most main railway stations, and the ferry's one big mall. Nuts, cold sausages, cheeses etc should be available to you just fine. The last time I flew from here to Venice we did get some very sticky, horrible sandwiches for lunch, (think the flight lasted 2 hours) and I wasn't diabetic yet. I'm sure I could've gotten a few extra packets of post-sandwich nuts off the stewardesses if I asked nicely and was for some reason adverse to fasting...

Hi @Brynderi ,

Welcome to the forum.

How long have you been diagnosed.
What meds (if any.) are prescribed for your condition.

I can appreciate the dilemma regarding snacks on a journey.. I used to tour with a band in the EU with no time realy to stop & smell the meat counter..

Edit to tag in my good friend @Antje77 , an EU citizen that may also help with a few pointers. :)

Jo, it's a while since I was last offered any kind of nuts on a flight. They seem to be ultra careful of allergens these days. That said, I haven't ever been challenged consuming my own.

I assume we are talking about a short flight if it is within the EU. So going without nuts for a couple of hours it better than someone having a severe allergic reaction.
A friend’s sister has had a dangerous reaction on a flight because someone nearby thought the request made by the airline crew didn’t apply to them.
For this reason, I avoid eating any nuts on any flights regardless of whether I would be challenged.

A cautionary tale indeed. But we can also be talking the best part of a day driving from Switzerland to Belgium?
As i did on a tour..

Let's stick to appropriate snacks.. :)

....And then I realised I hadn't flown since 2009! (Our cat became diabetic and would get in a bad way when others were in charge of his insulin, so we didn't holiday after that).

...Guess a lot has changed in the meantime!

Edited to get back on track:

If it is a matter of traveling within the Shengen countries, you can just get cheeses, nuts, cold cuts, salads etc wherever you enter the Union. Once you're in, there shouldn't be a problem crossing borders with whatever food you like, should that be on the itinerary.

You must have took the long way around then mate. :D

You can get from Cairns to Brisbane in under twenty hours. (19 hr 14 min (1,678.2 km) via Bruce Hwy/A1) on a good day.

It's a couple of hours by plane, and about twenty five hours by train.

Hi. Thanks for replying. I'm travelling on an overnight ferry, arriving at 4 am., then a long car journey of about 8 hours. Obviously there's no problem with shopping on arrival. I've managed 20 years of flights pre Covid, with only a few hitches and am confident about what to buy. I manage my diabetes entirely by diet and exercise. The problem since Brexit is that it's no longer possible to take any dairy, meat and plant based foods, including nuts from the UK into Europe.

Ah ok I see..
Can you take food onto the ferry ? Eat that whist travelling then stock up on arrival.
