Type 2 How much would a binge day affect me?

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 months ago I had a blood sugar of 300 that day and I just feel anxious,
After that I decided to get serious with my body, I still have things I want to do , I've been losing weight (18 kg), going on a diet, and doing at least 10,000 steps per day, now and my blood sugar is usually pretty low 70-80 if you take in count the discrepancies, after eating it will go up to 130 ( 134 is highest I have ever seen)

I eat very little carbs, I don't put salt in my foods, I cook most if my meals without oil, not a fan of sweets anyway, currently I'm 102 Kg at 1.73 height, however today I have an special occasion and I found my childhood favorite snacks traveling back to my city and I cant explain to you how much I love those disgusting fat bombs, they are a mix of various Mexican chips with a cheesy flavour.

Doing the calculations this is the nutritional value:
  • 300 gr of content.
  • 2000 calories,
  • 200 gr of carbs,
  • 117 grs of fat (no trans fat)
  • 2300 of sodium
  • 23 gr of protein.
now I KNOW, this a terrible idea, I'm not stupid, it will never be a healthy choice, but oh man I can't wait to eat that whole bag by myself while watching a movie. and I want to know, if I will be safe? could this kill me or send me to the hospital?

Right now I take 500gr of metformin per day, maybe I should take 2 today to prepare for the binge? i don't use any kind of insulin.

I heard about the whole Ketoacidisis thing but I imagine that only happens if you go way overboard right? surely having one binge one day one time wouldn't kill you? it will just spike your blood sugar to terrible amounts.

As a complementary question is there a limit of how many carbs you could eat before you pass the bucket?
Let's say i eat 2 bags, will that kill me?

I'm very ignorant in this topic and my doctors are not available right now so patience would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Hi, welcome

there are things to say about everything you’ve said but to simply answer your question, no you will probly survive unless you literally choke on the food lol

By the way, your pancreas is alive and well :)

Thanks for the answer, don't be afraid to elaborate if you want, I like reading.

what about long time effects, will I feel like ****?

it won't kill you if you eat that as a one off.
It might make you feel rubbish with high blood glucose though, and it will add to the long term effects of high blood glucose.
No-one has gotten diabetic complications from having high BG a single time, but over the months and years high BG's add up to lead to very nasty health issues you'd rather want to avoid.

I think you'd best start at the basics.
For starters, if you have T2, your pancreas didn't betray you, it's working just fine. It's having insulin resistance which means you need much more insulin to deal with carbs than a non diabetic. Likely your pancreas has been working overtime to provide you with this insulin, doing a very good job until it couldn't keep up with all the extra work.

It's different with T1, where the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin (and even there it's not the pancreas being the betrayer but the immune system), but this isn't very relevant with T2.

I can't wait to eat that whole bag by myself
Would it be possible to have a smaller portion for your feast and still be happy? Perhaps by adding some lower carb goodies to satisfy the bingeing craving?

Congratulations on your weight loss and number reductions.

Well there are lots of holes and people here are far more intelligent and better at explaining than me.

Assuming you are type 2, keto acidosis is extremely unlikely if you are taking metformin only, it is caused from a lack of insulin, as a type 2 you are more than likely producing more than enough, the problem isn’t your insulin production, it’s your bodies ability to use it, so you sugar stays in your bloodstream, potentially causing long term damage, mostly by rotting your small veins.

Carbs are sugar are carbs, if you eat too many, your sugars go up, does this make me feel unwell? No but I read all the time that it does make people ill until they come back down, I suppose there’s only one way to find out. Is this dangerous? Well yes but not as a one off in my opinion, one a week, much more likely, once a day then much more likely, personally I would eat them because if I felt deprived by not having them I would be far more likely to fall off the healthy eat wagon completely which would do more damage long term than a single cheat.

On a low carb diet, you are likely eating low salt, it’s often the case that people have to add salt, assuming your blood pressure is ok?

Everything I’ve said is just opinion, I am not medical at all, but I could build you a nice house lol

  • My doctor told me that you don't really feel the effects of high glucose? but in case you do, how would I feel? nauseous? pain? headaches? if im in gonna feel like I want to die I rather avoid it.

  • The name is just a joke, I'm aware how T2 works, I've been studying a lot about it. I also know that High glucose lead to complications of diabetes which of course I'm trying to avoid.

  • Yes, i could eat less, but do i want to eat less? do i have the self control? that's the tricky part.

When you were diagnosed, did you have any symptoms? Because they would be the symptoms you get if you eat the carbs, if it was a random blood test and you felt fine, then that’s likely how you will feel again.

Personally my only symptom was thirst, I have never felt unwell with blood sugars, even when very high.

Probly.

Thanks for the info I'm very aware of how type 2 works, when i was diagnoses i spend hours and housr trying to understand it, i thought i was doomed at first, however this info that "high glucose" makes you feel ill is news to me, i thought you couldn't feel it.

Yes all my numbers seen to be fine, I usually don't put salt on my food but i eat certain homemade sauces which have plenty of sodium, per day I would say I eat 1500 mg?, my blood pressure is also fine, i had various blood tests and they also were fine, no glucose on the urine, my insulin resistant test were as expected, spiked to 180 in one hour and went back to 80 in 2 hours, in 3 hours it was around 67, somewhat unrelated but the cholesterol studies also seemed fine.

I feel really anxious, pretty much a panic attack, but I have those regardless.

Sounds like you are doing fine. This of course is the time to live well and carry on doing fine forever, too often people wait until their diabetes worsens to take it seriously, good job for taking it seriously now, gives you a bright future. You could throw the snacks and feel really good about it? But nah I’d probly eat em :)

Those figures sound just about perfect to me (ie non diabetic), assuming I'm doing my mental arithmetic right. :).

Some people get symptoms when their blood sugar goes high, others don't, it's very much a personal thing. My only comment about your food experiment is to hope that it doesn't make you fall off the low carb wagon, as your current figures are so excellent. And I also wonder whether they will taste as good as they do in your memory, given that you're now used to a different diet.

This is the only bit of your OP that hasn’t been commented on. Metformin doesn’t have an immediate affect on what you have eaten or what you’re about to eat, it works by building up in your system over time. It is not recommended to take increased doses of prescribed meds without checking with your Dr. However a one off increased dose in these circumstances wouldn’t help anyway

Hi,

Have a warm welcome to the forum from me.

How often are you planning on watching a movie?

Hi,

Have a warm welcome to the forum from me.

How often are you planning on watching a movie?
if you mean how often do I plan on binging then just this time. I'm very aware of diabetes risks and I'm not willing to take it just for 30 minutes of feeling good.

But like I said, I'm back in my hometown, special occasion you know, better do it now because I don't think I will ever be able too.

Realistically, I think as a one off it's not going to do much harm. Additionally, there are things you can do to mitigate it, like if you do some good, brisk walking after eating your snacks. Tequila can also lower your blood sugar a lot, so that might help reduce any immediate spike.

For a special occasion, pig out and enjoy. Just, don't have a special occasion every day! No, increasing the metformin dosage is not going to prevent you from getting a hyper - only insulin can do it.
