Hi there I am T2 diagnosed 4 years and started novomix this time.last year. I inject 2x daily 22 unit am, 18 units pm. My weight has shot up by 2 stone since I started injecting and I am so disheartened as I was doing really well losing weight and on metformin. I have recently had covid and spent 4 days in hospital due to complications with diabetes as I wasn't eating properly and had significant vomiting and diahorrea for over 3 weeks and I still didn't lose a.pound in weight. I am nearly 20 stone now and am struggling with my knees. I also have arthritis and other health issues but the nurses told.me.it was likely the insulin causing weight gain. Has anyone experienced this? My hba1c was 113 and went down to 55 so worked really well in the beginning and I started to have hypos so the insulin was reduced but bs climbed and insulin was raised again though didn't have as great an impact this time.

Hi there and welcome! I hate to make it sound all about the food as it's not quite that simple but the only information missing is what do you eat on a normal day?

I usually have 2 pieces of toast for breakfast, veg soup or salad for lunch and meat, veg and 2 baby potatoes for tea. Very.little snacks. Have been so good and lost 2 1/2 stone b4 starting insulin so can't understand how its.going on so fast! My eating habits have got better since starting insulin. Also have switched hed to gin and slimline tonic as only alcohol

Hi Shelly, I also put on weight with insulin, I now take three meds that cause weight gain, terrific.

I hope you find some answers as you are clearly trying so hard and deserve better.

Hello Shellyc,

I gained 3 stones after switching to basal/bolus, but the Diabetic team being completely brain washed by the 'count them carbs to that insulin' don't want to listen to anything else.
I gained the 3 stones within 2-3 months-and I started to eat less carbs when I went on the basal/bolus, yet the Diabetic team are still obsessed with how many carbs to insulin ratio.

The above works for enough many people I am sure, but then these Diabetic teams think every-single-Diabetic-is-the-same, which gets annoying pretty fast!

I believe it is the insulin in my case

As I'm T1 I am cross posting a bit, but I would blame the carbs rather than the insulin. If you reduce the carbs you can reduce the insulin accordingly.

Yes I do understand but it is not the carbs.

Even when I do reduce the carbs and read up on the amount of carbs it's not that simple.
I can never go lower than 7 units-for every single time I do (regardless of how many carbs, portion size, time etc) you can guarantee my bsl will easily go up to 14 or above-every single time!

Every single time I actually look up the actual carbs and take insulin accordingly, it's always 14 or above, it's never been fine, even if sometimes I take 1-2 units extra.

For example if I was eating something with 40g carbs, there would be no way 4 units, 5 units, or even 6 units would be enough, I'd have to take 7 units at a minimum.
My basal is fine, I've seen my Diabetic specialist and he's agreed that it's fine, and I agree, it is at the level that is right for me.

Hmm. What insulin to carb ratio are you using? My thoughts are that it could be wildly out. What do your team say about it? And what happens if you skip carbs altogether in a meal?

I'd personally need 13 units for 40g of carbs.... Many diabetic teams start you on a ratio of 1 unit to 10g, but some people need 1 unit for 20g, others need 1 unit for 1g. And of course you may or may not still be making some of your own insulin, which complicates matters.

Welcome to the forums @Edwin123

What type of diabetes do you have and are you taking novomix or some other insulin?

(You are probably better asking this in a new thread as this one is about weight loss and quite old. )

What does your diabetic team say about this?
