Hello everyone
I have been t2 for approx 5 years. It wasn’t controlled by metformin because my diet and exercise were both terrible/non existent. I was prescribed 80mg gliclazide which brought it down and then lived in denial until last year when I finally got a diabetes review at the gp. It scared me into going low carb and starting couch to 5k four times a week, lost a bit of weight and my BG went down to between 5.8 lowest and 15 highest. Then I had a bad month with my mental health and the carbs crept up and jogging stopped and o stopped taking my readings. This Thursday I started feeling a bit nauseous and tired, with a weird ache in my lower right side. My partner made me call 111 this weekend and I went to the walk in where they said was poss gastritis from coeliac disease (been coeliac for years) but took my BG and it was 18. Also found glucose and ketones in my urine but don’t know how much as they didn’t tell me and seemed keen to get me out and said a doctor would call. The doctor said I should speak to my gp tomorrow and today I made an effort to eat low carb and go for a run /yoga. My BG was 19 pre exercise and 16 after. I then ate a low carb meal and now my BG is 21.9! I’m feeling tired and nauseous. I’m worried about DKA. Do I need to go to a&e or should I call the gp in the morni BG and not be such a whinger? Sorry for the long post, but I’m just a bit terrified

Hi @iwilltouchyourcat , welcome to the forum.

I'd go to A&E, better safe than sorry.
The combination of ketones, high blood glucose and nausea is enough to not want to take chances.

Hope you'll feel better soon, let us know how you are!

Thanks so much. I’ve just taken it again and it’s gone down to 16! Still high but better than it was. It’s just all over the place. I will monitor it over the next few hours and if it goes up again tonight I’ll be off to a&e. I’m so bummed by this right now

Just be aware that there is a ~15% inaccuracy on meters, you can do one reading and the next a second later could be 2-3 points difference, that can be -/+

I called 111 when my BSG was 18 and they asked me to go to A&E to which I went early morning. If I had a ketone meter though, I probably wouldn't have needed to go as there were no ketones.

Update- blood sugar am started at 15 then went to 30. Called gp who called me in and found ketones and glucose in urine and sent me to a&e where They said I am dehydrated. (Despite me drinking a lot this morning) blood sugar now 14.6 but haven’t eaten anything all day. They’re running bloods now. Fingers crossed I can go home soon! Thanks for the advice everyone x

How are you doing now, @iwilltouchyourcat ?
Love the username by the way! I have two cats who are happy to be touched by strangers, especially if they bring something yummy to break the ice. :D
Hiya, thanks so much, I’m loads better now. Didn’t realise how ****** I felt until I felt better. I’m glad my partner talked me into going to the gp! I was treated for DKA and dehydration have n hospital and sent home. Gp have prescribed me sitagliptin but since I’ve gone low carb my blood sugar has gone down to 5-6 in the afternoon after 10 days of eating that way. Still around 10 -13 in the morning, particularly after exercise, but nowhere near as high as it had been. When I got to the hospital it was 30! I’m overweight so the low carb has also helped me lose a few pounds too, so overall things are looking much better although early days. It kicked me into facing my diagnosis which ive been in denial about. It was a really scary experience for me. I work in the nhs and they always say hcp’s make the worst patients - I guess I’m proof of that! I’m kind of in mourning for my pre diabetes life and carbs though- I’ve always been an emotional eater sand they’ve been my weakness/comfort. this forum has been a great help to me. My aim is to stabilise my sugar and get healthier. Thanks for checking in on me!
Ps I WILL touch any cat! I also have two boys. They’ve been such a stress reliever over this past week
