Prescribed empagliflozin

I lost it during lock down and my HbA1c shot up to 83. I got it down to 67 but it still needs to be lower. My GP has decided to prescribe me Empagliflozin 10mg once a day along with my other medication of Metformin 500mg 2 tablets twice a day and Gliclazide 80mg also twice a day. Does anyone have any information or experience of this medication? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Did your health care professional run through side effects/risk factors or things like that? Some areas (in the UK) might call it safety netting or red flags.

He rang through them quickly on the phone. It was rushed. Some of the things I heard were concerning and I am considering not taking it. That's why I asked about it online.

What concerned you about the drug?

Not trying to be pedantic or sell it to you, just to understand the thought process.

In my opinion, it's a very effective drug that is being used increasingly often and earlier in a patient's diabetes management. However it's important to understand how it works (essentially secreting glucose through urine) and the side effects/when to escalate and not administer them.

I've been on it's sister drug dapagliflozin for about 8 years with no problems. My main advise though, is make sure you drink lots. my usual fluid intake is 3-4 litres a day. If this is much more than you're used to at 1st you'll think your never away from the loo, but as your BG's (hopefully) reduce and your body gets used to being more hydrated this slows down and I don't think I visit the loo more than anyone else
 
I’ve been on this maybe a few years, I’ve never had any problems. I don’t drink lots maybe about 5 cups of tea a day.
