Keto foods

Hi @Niamh1

I'm a type 2 so not an expert, however, I know some type 1s who eat low carb as I think it can make it easier with calculating their insulin requirements. However, are you asking about products labelled 'keto' or are you asking about a low carb/keto diet?

I was asking about keto foods to see whether they were good for type 1

@Niamh1 I have seen you mention "keto foods" in other threads.
Can you clarify what you mean by this?
Some people with type 2 (and a few with Type 1) follow a keto diet which I understand is about getting their body into ketosis through a very low carb diet.
With Type 1 a low carb diet is manageable but there is nervousness around ketosis as this can be an indicator of ketoacidosis if associated with a high blood sugar.

However, are you asking about products labelled 'keto' or are you asking about a low carb/keto diet?

@VashtiB ’s distinction is a good one. In my view there is no such thing as a ‘keto’ food. Those following a ketogenic way of eating tend to focus on real foods - meat, fish, eggs, dairy, above ground veg. I’d say they’re good for everyone.

There are also processed products labelled ‘keto’. I‘d question whether they’re actively good for anyone, although they may not impact blood glucose levels like higher carb processed products.

By eating very low carb, nutritional ketosis is induced as part of a process of converting the body to be fat burning rather than sugar burning.

There is a big difference between nutritional ketosis and diabetic DKA, which is the presence of ketones simultaneously with high blood sugars.

If you want information about how to follow a ketogenic diet as a type 1, I’d suggest starting with this website - it’s the work of Dr Ian Lake, who has type 1 himself: https://type1keto.com/
