Help please : hereditary Type 2 for last 5-6 years.

Diarohea for last 18 months on and off and has got worse recently.

BG recently varies from 10 mml/l to 21mml/l. Suffering from Candida.

So what is cause and effect?

Dr has advised to stop SR metformin to see if it stops diarohhea. We o tried about stopping when BG is so high.

At this point I have no idea what to eat?

How can I get Bg under control without metformin urgently as going to Paris next Wednesday.

So difficult to get doctors appointment am anxious.

What can I eat please?

Thank you in anticipation .

Meat, fish , eggs, green veg, all without restriction
Dairy including cheese, cream, butter, olive oil, olives and nuts, all in moderation

Cut right back on bread, wheat and grains of any sort, rice, potatoes, fruit, pasta

Thank you. I am vegetarian. Loved boiled veg with butter. Can I have homous with veg and sweet potatoes?
You will need to assess your carbohydrate intake, as plant based foods can be very high in sugar and starch, and a blood glucose meter, which I assume you have will help you track what you can and can't eat.
I found that sweet potato spiked my glucose levels higher than the ordinary sort.
I eat stir fries - I buy frozen ones from Lidl, salads, casseroles - made with various vege mixes, are all OK. I have mixed berries from time to time as they are quite low carb.
I have quite a bit of cheese, often with eggs, and yoghurt - I get the soy ones from time to time but they are oestrogen imitating compounds, so I don't eat a lot of them.
Presumably there are suitable options for protein and fats - though I found seed oils rather inflammatory and the only plant based oil I use is olive.
Being vegetarian does rather restrict the menu for a low carb way of eating, but it must be possible with the range of foods available these days.
I had to stop Metformin, but found that if I ate low carb I did not need it.

Use your meter and test your body and your food
We are all different with varying tolerances
I've learnt never to say never.
Diabetes is an odd condition and your body might end up telling you you need meat, or it might not
Testing, and time, will tell

Let your meter decide, test just before your meal and again around 2hrs later then decide if you are willing to accept how that meal affects your blood sugar. With sweet potato I think the clue is in the name but your meter will show if it's OK for you.

I presume for moral rather than health reasons?

Unfortunately it's quite hard to be a low carb vegetarian but not impossible.

www.dietdoctor.com has some good suggestions for vegetarian foods but if you could consider meat and fish your body would love you for it.

@Paeony

Hi there, I reduced my HBA1c from 105 to 47 in 3 months following a vegetarian low carb diet and eating to my meter, now I've learned more about spikes I'm experimenting a bit more now but checking my meter at first bite and 2 hours post bite.

I eat baked camembert with celery, cucumber and red pepper. I eat Halloumi, lots of eggs, cauliflower rice with paneer curry.

I make broccoli and stilton soup and have found a site with low carb bread which serves the bread cravings.

I enjoy creamy mushrooms.

I tried making celeriac and swede chips bit it spiked me to much.

I go for a walk every night and am doing small weights exercises.

I hope that helps..x

For what it's worth, I used to find readings as high as 21 invariably caused diarrhoea. You might find that as you reduce carbs, the diarrhoea will stop.
I hope so.

What are the best times to test and how do i know if I am doing something wrong, other than high numbers.

I started my new food regime last week and it is going remarkably well so far. Lost 5kg in a week! I have cut out sugar completely (candarel in tea), reduced portion size, leaving 12-14 hours overnight between food, cut out all pasta rice potatoes, and sticking to leafy greens, radishes, peppers ...basicly low carb or 0 carb veg. Meat wise, the usual, but in smaller portions. 2 egg omelette with cheese and bacon for breakfast most days, but frying a lot in olive oil and using mayonaise a fair bit. I think this is very doable, but i do worry that the fats like cheese, olive oil and yogurt, which i was always guilty for are not as OK as i think...... I gave myself a little treat of a small scotch and a glass of fizz at the weekend, but that was the only lapse. Am i getting this all right?

I have ordered a tester which should arrive tomorrow, so will start testing ASAP.

So back to my original question :) .... What are the best times to test and what do i look out for?

If you like celery and soup, i have a fab recipe that is great as a filler and really tasty. Super easy and quick to make and very low carb.
A head of celery chopped into 1 cm chunks, 1/2 a medium onion chopped, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, chicken stock to cover. fresh ground pepper. Fry the onions and celery for 5 mins on medium heat, cover by 1cm with chicken stock, cover and cook for 15 mins. Blitz the whole lot to a creamy soup with an immersion blender and voila!... You can also add a swirl of cream and/or a swirl of white truffle oil to take it to the next level, but the basic version is delicious quick, filling and tiny carbs. Keeps well in the fridge for a day or so as well!

Test before a meal and then 2 hrs later And compare the change. A non diabetic will usually return to the preprandial levels in that time after most meals so we aim to be back within 2mmol to replicate this response. If the rise is higher it shows we didn’t respond well to that meal and should avoid or adjust it next time.

Some people will add in a one hour test to see how high they spike as this is typically when it reaches its highest. Some foods have a delayed reaction so a person might continue to test after the 2 hours to see how long the rise lasts or how late the spike occurs. Some like to include a morning fasted reading (be aware this is typically the last one to get where you want it and can take months of good daytime readings before it responds well, also be aware of dawn phenomenon) maybe with a paired bedtime reading.

Just make sure you are doing the readings for a reason and getting potentially useful and actionable information. Just stabbing your finger randomly achieves little.

and on that note stab the sides of your fingers not the middle of the fingerprint or very tip. Adjust the pricier to the minimum required depth and don’t pick the same spot all the time. Being warm and well hydrated helps the blood flow.

In the early days post diagnosis I'd test:
Morning on getting up (my regime is rise, pee, weigh, test blood and record in spreadsheet , the weight and blood level that is).
Immediately prior to eating then one and two hours after the first mouthful for every meal until I was comfortable that my meals weren't having a significant impact on my blood sugars (Less than 1 mmol/l rise after 2 hours) .

I did this for about 6 months until my HbA1c had normalised and I knew what I was doing.

I also cut meals down to 2 per day so ended up testing about 7 times daily at the start. I don't eat breakfast.

I'm pretty strict on myself though, many people are happy with a 2 mmol/l rise at 2 hours after food.
