Dont have weetabix any more because BH too high, so I have porridge oats for breakfast with berries. I read that oats were good for slow glucose release, but my latest reading was 10.7 Not happy! I must be having too large a portion Thought it would be ok but it doesn’t appear to be!

Eggs cooked any way, bacon or high meat sausages, maybe cheese and cold meats would all be far better. You are never going to get a cereal that is good for your blood glucose. They are very high in carbs

Almost anything cereal based will have a very negative blood glucose effect.
They have huge carbohydrate percentages.
Porridge 60% carb
Weetabix 69% carbs

Eggs and bacon virtually 0 carbs
Or just ditch "breakfast food" and have coffee and double cream instead?

I am a Type 1 diabetic and have been told that a Keto diet is not recommended. What do people on the Forum think ?
Depends.. many T1s go for the Bernstein small numbers model others are happy to dose for their carb intake.
Who told you it wasn't recommended?

Dr Ian Lake is a T1 who follows a keto diet for example

He's also a very nice chap.

While almost zero carb breakfasts exist I find my stomach doesn't like a high protein meal in the morning, so I have a mix of milled flaxseed with a little chia seeds and a couple of chopped nuts or some seeds, cooked in water with cinnamon then I stir in a spoonful of coconut milk and serve it with double cream. (When I started I used to add a little oatbran too, until I got used to the taste of chia and flaxseed. Even so it was less than 20g of carbs including a milky coffee.)

porridge is very high in carbs and the berries would certainly give your bg a boost , that is a mix I would certainly avoid .

It seems clear that oats are not for you, it’s a personal tolerance issue. Three times a week I have an oats breakfast totalling 40g of carbs and blood glucose returns to about 6.0 after 2 hours. But I also have with it 15g of cheese which I think has a pacifying effect. Anyway, this shows that any statement like “any cereals are bad for type 2s” is over-generalised.

Just been reading articles on cereals I too have porridge oats and small amount of berries but prefer oats to regular laxatives. K

Oats are the devil incarnate for me and I had readings of 15 at one point after eating them. I take inulin to keep things going and it seems to work a treat ;)

Doctor has put me on Gliclizide 40mg 1 tablet a day will see how I go on this has last year he gave me Gliclizide 80mg
asked why I was told to stop taking it and was told it was because I was usually under control and change of diet would get me back on track. Anxiety and stress caused by Covid I wasn’t in a good place to help mysel, that’s why I’m in the position I’m in today. But hopefully a more positive attitude will help me get back to lower BG readings I’ve always been able to use diet to keep on track never up-to the last year have I needed medication in 20+ years of being type2 but I was super active years ago had to stop the hill and fell walking and Nordic walking after osteoarthritis in my knees and Cateracts. Just need to get my head on!!! K
