Merry Christmas,

Day six of this new journey, due to it being Christmas and not being able to follow up with my GP i have a million questions.

Hospital on Monday diagnosed with type two and a reading of 22 given metformin 500mg twice a day

Today Christmas day lost a stone, no carbs or sugar and an average blood reading from the libre 2 of 12.7 after having the device for 8 hrs.

I was 22 stone and 5ft 8.

Now 21 stone and still 5ft 8

Is this good is this bad?

Should my sugars be lower?

Feeling mixed, one min ok next washed out, IBS kicks off with some heart palps as well.

Hi, merry Christmas to you too. From what I can see you are doing brilliantly, following the same road I did, took a little while for my blood sugars to average down in the lower 5 and peaking around 8 after eating but that did take a month or two, you are on the same road as me and I am sure you will achieve what you need to if you stick with the way you are going. Low carb was and is the way for me too, have lost 4 stone since July and never hungry.

That is a good start and you are on the right track. It's a marathon not a sprint so expect both weight and bg to take a while to come down. Use the time to educate yourself all you can about diabetes, and to start preparing for a way of eating thatbyou can sustain for life.
Initially for a few weeks you may get some odd symptoms as your body adjusts but these should soon disappear and you will feel much much better. It like withdrawal symptoms.

Sounds like you’re doing great.

When are you testing your sugars? It’ll take a while for them to come down overall but if you test immediately before and then 2 hours after the first bite of a meal, you can track the impact food is having. That’ll be the best way to bring overall levels down. Ideally you’re looking for a reading no higher than 2mmols higher than where you started after a meal.

I didn’t have a meter for a couple of months or so after diagnosis and it still took a while before seeing normal levels, so I dread to think what they were when I started (I had a very high hba1c).

Keep at it and expect your body to react to a new way of eating - my migraines initially got worse (but are now resolved) and I had terrible keto ‘flu’. Keep hydrated and plenty of electrolytes should help you.

A smashing start on the weight...bravo

The height however is always an individual thing ...it took me a few months before I reached 6 ft 6" .. <wink>

As said it's a lifestyle not a diet, so deffo make it full of thing you can enjoy.

A world of foods I never knew I liked, before I was pushed into trying things I'd heard and many I'd never heard of. Lol

Sure diet doctor website has been mentioned in your travels through type 2 ..a wealth of ideas & advice if you haven't looked.

Not using a libre/CGM so not sure how relevant an average over 8 hours is ..mmhh

I wonder if testing might offer better information at an early stage ?

So noticed a monthly step down for my scores but no idea what my 24 hour average would have been...and wondering, now you mention it which would be more useful so early on.

I'd say it's akin to tracking a speedboat on radar darting across the harbour/beach (the early days)
..compared to the steadier track of a cruise liner once away from shore and the dangers of running around (once you've established a steady pattern ? )


But I'd deffo take a stab on wake up to establish a genuine FBG at the start of this journey .
And @Goonergal makes good points re pre & post testing.

But as said... MARVELLOUS start and great results .

A great start and I agree with previous posters about testing before and after meals- this is definitely the information that allows you to make decisions about what food you should eat to reduce your levels.

It's a marathon as others have said and may take a while for levels to reduce so be encouraged as you have already made a great start!
